Abstract:
Lactones may be prepared from alcohols by treating said alcohol with methyl alcohol in the presence of an alkaline substance and an oxidizing agent at an elevated temperature to prepare the desired product. Examples of such lactones are dimethyl, diphenyl, dicyclohexyl and di-p-tolyl-delta-valerolactones. These compounds have utility as solvents and as starting monomers in the preparation of polyester formulations, among other uses.
