摘要: The present invention features a system for detecting a substance in a fluid sample. A capillary is provided with a longitudinal axis and a channel is formed in it for receiving a fluid sample. The channel is disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis. A reflecting surface surrounds the outer surface of the capillary for reflecting electromagnetic energy. The reflecting surface has an incident window for allowing the electromagnetic energy to enter the capillary and an exit window for allowing the electromagnetic energy to exit the capillary. The exit window is disposed downstream of the incident window with respect to the longitudinal axis, so that the electromagnetic energy that enters the capillary is internally reflected more than once by the reflecting surface.

摘要: An optical fiber (500) illuminates the bore (520) of a capillary tube (515) that is used for separating chemicals by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The fiber terminates in either two sloped regions (525) and a curved region (530) or two sloped regions (705) and a flat region (700). Light from these regions is focused on the bore of the capillary tube. Since the fiber is sized to illuminate the core of a CE capillary, it is larger than fibers used in telecommunications and its sloped regions are at angles that would be unsuitable for use in telecommunications. The relatively large diameter of the capillary permits efficient use of a light source (905).

摘要: An electrode assembly for capillary electrophoresis (CE) comprises a manifold (310), a connector (305) a sheath (300), and a seal (325). A capillary tube (100) passes through the manifold, the connector, the sheath, and the seal, stopping just beyond the end of the sheath. The sheath is fillable with water (330) or another fluid that cools the capillary tube in the vicinity of the electrode, thereby preventing degradation of a sample due to heat. The sheath may be metal or plastic with a metal sleeve electrode on its exterior. The sheath is sufficiently strong to penetrate a rubber or other pierceable cap on a vial. The manifold and connector incorporate an air path (605, 312, 307) so that when the electrode is fully inserted into a vial, the contents (650) of the vial are at atmospheric pressure (or another applied pressure or vacuum).

摘要: Adjustable aperture for photoelectric monitoring of a light transmitted through a capillary, wherein the aperture includes a device for providing a light beam having a predetermined limited extent in a vertical direction, a selectively operable device for limiting the extent of the light beam in a horizontal direction transverse to the vertical direction so that the extent in the horizontal direction can be selectively varied, and a device for positioning a capillary having longitudinal and diametral directions so that the diametral direction of the capillary lies in the vertical direction of the light beam and so that the beam of light passes through the capillary in a diametral dimensional thereof. The adjustable aperture can be used in combination with capillary zone electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography apparatus. Methods are provided for analyzing samples of one or more compounds by capillary zone electrophoresis or high performance liquid chromatography using the adjustable aperture.
