An alkaline storage battery, a positive electrode material for the alkaline storage battery, and a method of preparation for the positive electrode material are disclosed. The positive electrode material is made up of nickel hydroxide particles that have cobalt oxyhydroxide on their surface. The particles may be prepared by a process in which &agr;-cobalt hydroxide adhered to the surface of the nickel hydroxide particles is oxidized to cobalt oxyhydroxide. The battery has a superior rate of utilization of active material, cycle life, and discharge characteristics.

The present invention provides a positive electrode, which contains at least one organic sulfide compound selected from the group consisting of a thiolato compound and a thiol compound, and at least one selected from the group consisting of sulfur and a lithium sulfide represented by Formula (1): (LixS)n, where 0 0, a method of manufacturing the positive electrode, and a lithium battery using the positive electrode. Compared with the prior art lithium battery, the lithium battery using the positive electrode of the present invention has a greater capacity and a higher voltage. The positive electrode of the present invention effectively suppresses escape of the positive electrode active material from the positive electrode during charge and discharge operations and thus actualizes a secondary battery of high energy density having a less decrease in service capacity.

A safety vent body having a passage at the center of the bottom surrounded by a circular protrusion, a safety vent cover having a vent hole bonded to the safety vent body, and an elastic valve component consisting of valve seat and rubber pad bonded together into a one-piece structure and a coil spring, housed in a space provided by the safety vent body and the safety vent cover. A plastic container sealed alkaline rechargeable battery realizes a longer cycle life and high reliability by incorporating a resealable safety vent in accordance with the present invention.

A teaching playback swing-phase-controlled above-knee prosthesis has a thigh frame, a leg frame, an air cylinder interconnecting the thigh and leg frames and provided with adjusting means for adjusting the degree of opening the valve of the air cylinder to a plurality of degrees respectively for a plurality of walking speeds selected during trial walking. A mode selecting switch has positions respectively for setting degrees of opening of the valve of the air cylinder in a teaching mode and for a playback mode in which one of the degrees of opening is selected according to an actual walking speed. An opening detector detects the degree of opening of the valve of the air cylinder. An opening storage device for stores a plurality of set degrees of opening of the valve of the air cylinder. A phase detector detects swing phases and stance phases, walking speed detector determines an actual walking speed, and control unit adjusts the degree of opening of the valve of the air cylinder to one of the set degrees of opening corresponding to the actual walking speed. The teaching playback swing-phase-controlled above-knee prosthesis is capable of automatically controlling the speed of swing motion of the leg frame according to the actual walking speed of the prosthesis wearer.

It comprises a nickel hydroxide powder and a cobalt hydroxide powder, wherein the cobalt hydroxide powder has a specific surface area of 10 m.sup.2 /g or larger and a particle diameter of one-half or less of that of the nickel hydroxide powder. A nickel-metal hydroxide storage battery having this nickel positive electrode is also disclosed.

The invention provides long life alkaline storage batteries free from short-circuiting using plates having a punching metal as a substrate. In the alkaline storage batteries of the present invention, at least one of the positive plate and the negative plate comprises a punching metal as a substrate, the size thereof is different from that of another plate, and the plates are arranged so that the cut side of the plate having the punching metal substrate at which the substrate is cut through the punched portions does not overlap the side of the adjacent plate of opposite polarity. The plates having such a construction prevents needle-shaped projections produced by cutting the substrate through the punched portions from causing the short-circuiting with the adjacent plate of opposite polarity.
