Abstract:
Methods and systems of controlling transmit power in a multi-user wireless communication system is provided, A transmit power, level for a transmitter is determined according to an algorithm based in communication theory, such as an iterative water-filling procedure, which takes into account an assumption of transmit behaviours of transmitters in the communication system. Actual transmit behaviours of transmitters in the communication system are monitored using a learning algorithm to determine whether any transmitters exhibit transmit behaviours which are not consistent with the assumption.
Abstract:
Various embodiments for components and associated methods that can be used in a binaural speech enhancement system are described. The components can be used, for example, as a pre-processor for a hearing instrument and provide binaural output signals based on binaural sets of spatially distinct input signals that include one or more input signals. The binaural signal processing can be performed by at least one of a binaural spatial noise reduction unit and a perceptual binaural speech enhancement unit. The binaural spatial noise reduction unit performs noise reduction while preferably preserving the binaural cues of the sound sources. The perceptual binaural speech enhancement unit is based on auditory scene analysis and uses acoustic cues to segregate speech components from noise components in the input signals and to enhance the speech components in the binaural output signals.
Abstract:
A new type of passive trihedral corner reflector is described which rotates the polarization of a reflected microwave beam by 90.degree. and thereby permits a reflected radar beam to be more easily distinguished by the interrogating radar system from the random reflections from nearby objects, i.e., clutter. Rotation of the incident beam is provided by locating a passive polarizing or "twist" grid of closely spaced thin parallel wires spaced above one conducting surface by air or by a dielectric to give an electric spacing from the surface of about 0.25 .lambda.. The spacing of the wires is less than 0.25 .lambda. so that the wires constitute a reflecting surface for signals polarized parallel to the wires. The reflector can have triangular or square sides which are mutually orthogonal. In a preferred embodiment the reflector is tipped forward by 35.degree. from a reference horizontal plane and tilted clockwise in a vertical reference plane by 15.degree. to optimize reflections. The reflector has particular application to navigation systems, especially to maritime navigation systems.
Abstract:
Methods and systems relating to a cognitive tracking radar system. A radar system determines an immediately preceding state of a target being tracked. Based on this immediately preceding state, the system determines parameters and waveforms which may be used to better illuminate the target. These parameters and waveforms are then used when illuminating the target. The state of the target is then measured from the reflected returns of the illuminating waveform. The newly received measurements then form the basis for the new state of the target and the procedure is repeated.
Abstract:
The method and apparatus provides the in-phase I and quadrature Q components of a bandpass signal x(t) of center frequency f.sub.c and bandwidth 2w. The signal x(t) is heterodyned to have an intermediate center frequency f.sub.o where w.ltoreq.f.sub.o .ltoreq.f.sub.c. This signal is divided into two signals and each is sampled during successive periods T.sub.s where T.sub.s =m/f.sub.o and m is an integer. However, the instant of sampling of one signal is shifted with respect to the other by b/4f.sub.o where b is an odd integer. In the various implementations, the shift may be either positive, negative, or both, to provide the quadrature component Q, whereas the sampling of the other signal provides the in-phase component I.
Abstract:
Methods and systems of analyzing an operating environment of wireless communication equipment in a wireless communication system are provided. A stimulus in the operating environment at a location of the wireless communication equipment is sensed and linearly expanded in Slepian sequences using a multitaper spectral estimation procedure. A singular value decomposition is performed on the linearly expanded stimulus, and a singular value of the linearly expanded stimulus provides an estimate of interference at the location of the wireless communication equipment.

Abstract:
An adaptive interference canceller for use in a dual polarized radar system for receiving cross-polar and like-polar signals and generating an output signal corresponding to the received cross-polar signal with a like-polar interfering component cancelled therefrom. A modified adaptive filter is provided with a self-adjusting impulse response conforming to a least means square adjustment cancelling the influence of the like-polar signal, which is generally much stronger on the cross-point signal. The resulting output has a high target-to-clutter ratio and therefor a high probability of detection.
