A DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE TRANSDUCER OF THE CAPICATOR TYPE UTILIZING ISOLATION DIAPHRAGMS FOR SENSING THE DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE DIRECTLY, AND HAVING A CENTRAL CHAMBER WITH A SENSING DIAPHRAGM IN THE CENTRAL CHAMBER. THE CENTRAL CHAMBER IS FILLED WITH OIL OR A SUITABLE LIQUID WHICH TRANSMITS PRESSURE FORM THE ISOLATION DIAPHRAGMS TO THE SENSING DIAPHRAGM. THE SENSING DIAPHRAGM FORMS A CAPACITOR PLATE, AND THE WALLS OF THE CHAMBER ADJACENT TO THE SENSING DIAPHRAGM ALSO FROM CAPACITOR PLATES. THE PRESSURES ARE TRANSMITTED TO THE SENSING DIAPHRAGM THROUGH THE OIL SO THAT ONLY DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE IS SENSED BETWEEN THE TWO ISOLATION DIAPHRAGMS. THE SENSING DIAPHRAGM AND ITS CHAMBER ARE MADE SO THAT ANY EXCESSIVE PRESSURE CAUSES THE SENSING DIAPHRAGAM TO BOTTOM OUT AGAINST ITS MOUNTING CHAMBER SURFACES. THE UNIT IS METAL EXTREMELY STABLE, BY USING A RELATIVELY MASSIVE METAL HOUSING WITH A GLASS CENTER PORTION PLATE MATERIAL RIGHT DEPOSITING THE METALLIC CAPACITOR PLATE MATERIAL RIGHT ONTO THE GLASS SURFACES WHICH FORM THE SENSING CHAMBER.

The circuitry including the variable capacitance sensor is excited by an external DC power source. A portion of the direct current power is converted to a high-frequency alternating current which is in circuit with the capacitance sensor and individual rectifying means for each of the capacitances. The rectified currents from the capacitances are compared to a reference current and the resulting signal together with a measure of all the other direct currents used by the circuit provide a signal to control the total current supplied to the circuitry. The total current then bears a prescribed and dependent relation to the capacitance of the sensor. The rectifying means form separate rectifying loops each of which is driven by an AC excitation winding. These rectifying loops are used in a special circuit configuration with a capacitance pressure sensor to provide a highly linear output signal as a function of differential pressure.

A pressure sensor for use with high-pressure extruders utilizing a mechanical force-rebalance system wherein a pressure sensed at a first diaphragm causes a flow of fluid from a source of fluid under pressure to enter a chamber. The fluid pressure acts on a second diaphragm or piston member to balance the force on the first diaphragm through a mechanical system. The amount of fluid pressure at the second diaphragm necessary to rebalance the first diaphragm is indicative of the pressure sensed by the first diaphragm.
