In a method of manufacturing a plurality of steam turbines for use in various applications which differ in the respective thermodynamic parameters such as, for example, cooling-water temperature, ambient temperature, given boiler data, process-steam requirement, etc., the steam turbines in each case having at least one high-pressure part with first blading and a control-wheel stage for part-load operation, a simplification and cost saving is achieved owing to the fact that standard blading, which is identical for all the steam turbines, is used as first blading, and in that the adaption of the individual steam turbine to the thermodynamic parameters of the respective application is carried out by appropriate design or variation of the control-wheel stage.

In a steam turbine structure, a stuffing box is conventionally provided for the rotor shaft at the shaft passthrough opening in the turbine casing and blocking steam is admitted to the stuffing box. In order to prevent thermal-shock damage to the shaft at the stuffing box during a re-start of the turbine while the shaft temperature is still approximately at its normal operating temperature and while the blocking steam is then temporarily in a wet state, the blocking steam is prevented from reaching the stuffing box, the wet steam being diverted by way of a controllable valve through a by-pass leading to a condenser. After the blocking steam has reached its dry state, the valve closes off the by-pass to the condenser and opens the blocking steam line leading to the stuffing box.

The otherwise conventional connecting elements between the medium pressure partial turbines and the low pressure partial turbines with their associated sealing problems on the outer casings disappear.

In order to avoid the “buckling” of multi-shell turbomachine casings during a cooling phase following the shutdown, it is proposed to provide means in order to suitably discharge warm medium which collects at a point of the casing cavity situated at the highest geodetic level. In an embodiment, it is proposed to allow the corresponding lines to open out in the stack of a power plant; the stack draft effect assists the flow even further. Regulating members are advantageously provided in the lines in order to shut off these lines during operation of the turbomachine on the one hand and in order not to arrange the flow through the casing cavities too intensively on the other hand.

A fluid-flow machine such as a steam turbine including an inner shell surrounding the rotor component of the machine and which is secured to the foundation, and an outer shell surrounding the inner shell and which is composed of three principal components, these being a support frame secured to the foundation, an exhaust duct for the steam or other motive fluid depending from the frame and leading to the condenser, and an exhaust cover above the frame. The inner shell is divided along a horizontal plane passing through the rotor axis into upper and lower hemi-cylinder halves. Each end of the frame includes a lower fixed part incorporating the lower half of the pass-through structure for the rotor shaft and a removable upper part in the form of a yoke beam incorporating the upper half of the shaft pass-through structure. The exhaust cover is divided into two longitudinally extending separable halves joined to each other and to the adjacent surfaces of the support frame by means of fluid-tight connection flanges, so that by disconnecting the flanges and removing the two halves of the exhaust cover, and disconnecting and removing the upper hemi-cylindrical half of the inner shell, and disconnecting and removing the yoke beams at each end of the support frame, the rotor is completely exposed and can be lifted upwardly and removed after the shaft bearings are opened.
