    摘要: An ice protection system and method are provided that facilitate the prevention or reduction in ice formation upon an aerodynamic surface. The ice protection system may include at least one induction coil spaced apart from an electrically conductive layer of an aerodynamic surface and disposed interior of an exterior surface of the aerodynamic surface. For example, the ice protection system may include a plurality of induction coils with each induction coil being spaced apart from the other induction coils such that the respective induction coils are associated with different portions of the aerodynamic surface. The ice protection system may also include a signal source configured to provide alternating current to the induction coil(s) to thereby generate an electromagnetic field that creates an eddy current in the electrically conductive layer so as to heat the electrically conductive layer.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for inspecting an object using a backscatter inspection system. In one illustrative embodiment, an apparatus comprises a radiation source, a collimator, and a detector system. The radiation source is configured to emit radiation. The collimator is configured to form a beam using a portion of the radiation emitted by the radiation source. The beam is directed towards a surface of an object. The detector system is configured to detect backscatter formed in response to the beam encountering the object. A shape of the detector system is configured to be changed into a selected shape.

A response to electromagnetic radiation directed to a surface of the composite workpiece is separated into a number of wavelengths for each of a number of locations on the surface of the composite workpiece. A set of contaminants on the surface of the composite workpiece is identified from the number of wavelengths for the each of the number of locations. A two-dimensional image of the surface of the composite workpiece is generated with a set of graphical indicators indicating the set of contaminants identified from the number of wavelengths for the each of the number of locations on the surface of the composite workpiece.

    摘要: Presented is a system and method for verifying the authenticity of a part using non-destructive backscattered X-rays. The method uses an identification tag embedded in the part that when illuminated by X-rays returns backscattered radiation that is detected and used to authenticate the part. The system comprises a source of low energy X-rays that irradiate a part, a detector for detecting backscattered radiation returned from the part, and a means for determining the presence of an authentication tag in the part. In embodiments, the system and method use a tag made of a material that returns a high amount of backscattered radiation thereby providing a high level of contrast in comparison with the part. In embodiments, the placement of the tag in the part, the geometry of the tag, and coding in the tag are used to authenticate the part.

    摘要: A system and methods for x-ray backscatter reverse engineering of structures. One embodiment includes a plurality of articulated arms attached to a movable base. Another embodiment includes a single counterweighted arm attached to a movable base. The arms include x-ray detectors. At least one x-ray source, which may be mounted on the arm(s), emits x-rays, which are backscattered off the surfaces and objects of interest and captured by the detectors to generate images of hidden objects. The present system provides improved speed and resolution over prior art systems. The system has a field-of-view and effective scanning range versatile enough to work in various orientations and in environments of various sizes. In certain embodiments the system is compact and lightweight so that it can be easily transported and used within confined spaces or in environments where weight is a consideration, such as inside or underneath aircraft. The system is also pointable and adaptable.
