Abstract:
A recoil starter has a guide surface with limited polar symmetry about the axis of the pull-rope limiting rotational orientation of the pull-handle in the at-rest position to less than three angular positions.
Abstract:
A connection device for a marine propulsion system is provided in which a selective locking mechanism automatically connects or disconnects two components of the marine propulsion system together in response to rotation of a tube and a rod. This relative rotation of the tube and rod is caused automatically when one of the components of the marine propulsion system is rotated relative to the other component.
Abstract:
First and second pliable members are each attached to an outboard motor and to a fixed location on the transom or transom bracket associated with the outboard motor. One pliable member is used on the starboard side of the outboard motor while another is used on the port side. As the outboard motor is tilted about its trim axis, the two pliable members work in coordination with each other to exert a force on the outboard motor in a direction away from any direction in which the outboard motor is rotated about its steering axis as it is being tilted about its trim axis. This coordinated action by the two pliable members aligns the outboard motor in a straight ahead position when it is tilted upward into an inoperable position for transportation.
Abstract:
An uplock assembly for an outboard motor tilt mechanism has a pair of brackets pivotally connected with an overcenter hinge. The uplock assembly has a lever that an operator uses to force the brackets into an in-line, end-to-end overcenter configuration in which a lower bracket supports against a horizontal support axle attached to the tilt mechanism and an upper bracket pushes against a swivel bracket of the tilt mechanism. The upper and lower brackets are sized so that the swivel bracket is pushed beyond its normal full up trailering position into a tight configuration in which the swivel bracket and motor are restrained from bouncing even under excessively rough transportation conditions. Preferably, the uplock assembly includes a lever guide member having a catch mechanism that secures the lever in a fixed position when the uplock assembly is engaged to support the outboard motor.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for cooling exhaust in an outboard marine propulsion system provides engine cooling water to the exhaust prior to its discharge into an exhaust cavity formed in the upper portion of a depending gearcase. Excessive heating of the walls surrounding the exhaust cavity is thereby provided. Various embodiments are disclosed for diverting a portion of cooling water from a point adjacent an engine cooling water inlet into the exhaust path prior to discharge into the exhaust cavity.
Abstract:
A tiller arm is provided with a lock mechanism that retains the tiller arm in an upwardly extending position relative to an outboard motor when the tiller arm is rotated about a first axis and the lock mechanism is placed in a first of two positions. Contact between an extension portion of the lock mechanism and the discontinuity of the arm prevents the arm from rotating downwardly out of its upward position.
