A phthalocyanine compound of a structural formula of phthalocyanine represented by the general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein 1 to 8 of a total 16 positions are substituted with a phenoxy group, the phenoxy group at either of the ortho positions is substituted with an aryl group which may be substituted, all the atoms in the aryl group and the substituents at the residual ortho positions excluding the hydrogen atoms assume a total atomic radius of not less than 6.0 .ANG., and a central atom group M contains a metal atom of not less than trivalence, a bromine-substituent of the compound, a phthalocyanine composition comprising the phthalocyanine compound and the bromine atom-containing phthalocyanine compound, and an optical recording medium containing it in a recording layer.

The dye is manufactured with one member selected from the class consisting of a combination of (A)+(B) groups, a combination of (A)+(C) groups, a combination of (B)+(C) groups, and a combination of (A)+(B)+(C) groups, wherein (A) represents a group of quinizarine compounds, (B) represents a group of anthraquinone compounds, and (C) represents a group of phthalocyanine compounds.

This invention is to provide a novel quinizarin compound which has a quinizarin structure represented by a following formula (1) having one to four of the 5, 6, 7, and 8 positions and at least either the 6 or 7 position formed of at least one member selected from the class consisting of secondary amino groups, alkylthio groups, and optionally substituted phenylthio groups, and having the remaining positions thereof formed of at least one member selected from the class consisting of hydrogen atom, halogen atoms, amino group, hydroxy group, alkoxy groups, and optionally substituted phenoxy groups, a method for the production thereof, and a dye, an electrophotographic grade color toner composition, a thermal-transfer recording sheet, an optical recording medium, an ink jet grade ink composition and a color filter severally comprising the quinizarin compound. ##STR1##

An electrophotographic plate-making quality matrix plate provided on an electroconductive substrate thereof with a photosensitive layer formed of an alkali-soluble binder resin containing an organic photoelectroconductive compound, which matric plate is characterized by the fact that said organic photoelectroconductive compound is a zinc phthalocyanine represented by the general formula I: ##STR1## wherein R is a --SZ group (where Z is a phenyl group, a phenyl group substituted with an alkyl group of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or a naphthyl group), and said binder resin is a copolymer obtained by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising (a) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of hydroxyalkyl acrylates and hydroxyalkyl methacrylates, (b) at least one copolymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid, (c) at least one styrene compound, and (d) at least one compound selected from among acrylic esters other than said hydroxyalkyl acryaltes of (a).

A phthalocyanine compound possessing an excellent ability to absorb near infrared ray, exhibiting excellent compatibility with resin, and excelling in such special qualities as heat resistance, light resistance, and resistance to weather conditions is provided. A method for producing a novel phthalocyanine compound which excels in yield and purity, allows no introduction of a chlorine atom into the phthalocyanine skeleton, and possesses relatively bulky substituents is provided. This method is characterized by causing an orthophthalonitrile compound having a substituent exhibiting smaller .sigma..sub.p values than .sigma..sub.m values in the Hammett's rule to react with a metal oxide in the presence of a compound forming in the aqueous solution thereof at 25.degree. C. an acid or conjugate acid having a dissociation index pKa (the logarithmic value of the reciprocal of the dissociation constant of the acid or conjugate acid) of not more than 7.0.
