The media processing device conveys a process medium and processes the conveyed process medium by a first process unit disposed to the conveyance path, and an operation selection unit then determines the content of the next operation based on the result of the first process. After the next operation is determined, the conveyance control unit conveys the process medium upstream to or upstream of the process position of a second process unit. A publisher has a media drive, a transportation unit that conveys a recording medium according to a transportation command received from a host, and a printer that discharges ink from the nozzles of a print head to print on the label side of the recording medium. The printer also applies a cleaning process to the print head according to an internal signal that is generated when the transportation command or a data write command is received from a host. The cleaning process is executed while the media is conveyed.

Media stackers store media in a stack. Media processing units write data and/or print a label on the media. A media transportation mechanism has a transportation arm that can hold the media and move vertically, and transports the media between the media stackers and the media processing units by movement of the transportation arm. A control unit controls the media processing units and the media transportation mechanism 31. The control unit has a measurement unit that measures the height of media stacked in the media stacker when media is removed from the stacker by the media transportation mechanism, and a comparison unit that compares the measured media height with a reference value to detect the difference therebetween, and determines the remaining media count in the media stacker.

The two-step print head includes a plurality of printing elements of plural colors for performing color printing. The printing elements are divided into upper printing elements and lower printing elements for each different color separated by a boundary line. The print data assignment control section assigns print data of each color to the upper printing elements and the lower printing elements beginning adjacent the boundary line. The transportation control section controls a transportation amount of a printing medium in accordance with the number of the printing elements to which the print data is assigned.
