Abstract: Described is a system and medical device for the electromagnetic tracking of a medical instrument transported through a medical device, the medical device having a central axis, a channel that receives and transports a medical instrument through the medical device, the channel extending to a distal portion of the medical device. According to some aspects, the system includes tracking circuitry and a plurality of coordinated electromagnetic sensors for generating a virtual axis of travel for the medical instrument. According to some aspects, the virtual axis passes through the opening of the device and is aligned with a tool insertion axis.
