The rare-earth oxide is selected from the group comprising: Pr2O3, Nd2O3, Pm2O3, Sm2O3, Eu2O3, Gd2O3, Tb2O3, Dy2O3, Ho2O3; Er2O3, Tm2O3, Yb2O3, La2O3, Ga2O3, Ce2O3, and Lu2O3. Additionally, an all-fiber isolator using highly rare-earth oxide doped fibers is disclosed.

A single-frequency Brillouin fiber ring laser with extremely narrow linewidth comprises a single-frequency narrow-linewidth rapid-tunable pump laser, a temperature-controlled acoustically-damped package for Brillouin fiber ring laser cavity, and an auto-tracking feedback electronic loop with novel configuration for active stabilization. The Pound-Drever-Hall frequency-locking technique is employed to keep pump laser frequency in resonance with one of the Brillouin fiber ring cavity modes. Instead of changing cavity length of Brillouin fiber ring laser, the pump laser frequency is rapidly tuned in the auto-tracking feedback electronic loop. This enables extremely narrow linewidth radiation emitted from a Brillouin fiber ring laser without stretching the fiber ring. Dual-wavelength actively stabilized Brillouin fiber ring laser may be generated from a single ring cavity by polarization-combining or wavelength-combining two pump laser beams and using two independent feedback loops to the two operation wavelengths.

Thermally dissimilar glass fibers are fusion spliced by pretreating the cleaved end surface of the high-temperature fiber to provide a smooth surface for making good contact with the low-temperature fiber. The fibers are heated to a temperature that is high enough to soften the low-temperature fiber but not the high-temperature fiber and brought in contact to form the fusion joint.

Phosphate glass fibers are an attractive alternative to silica fibers because they can be co-doped with much higher concentrations of Yb and Er and exhibit a higher optical gain per unit length. However, in such fibers the absorption of the pump is high and heating effects caused by the pump laser can cause a significant change in refractive index. This problem is overcome with a phosphate glass composition that exhibits a temperature coefficient of refractive index &bgr;=dn/dT close to zero. This is achieved by avoiding alkali metal oxides in the glass composition and by adjusting the concentration of the network modifiers such as BaO.

A low-cost approach provides a low loss and mechanically robust fusion splice between a standard silica fiber and a low-temperature multi-component glass fiber. An asymmetric heating configuration creates a temperature gradient between the silica and multi-component glass fibers that enhances diffusion, hence bond strength. The multi-component glass fiber may also be drawn with an outer cladding of a different multi-component glass. The outer cladding is selected so that it is thermally compatible with the multi-component glass used for the core and inner cladding and compatible with forming even stronger thermal diffusion bonds with the silica fiber.

A long-long coupled-cavity glass laser includes a pair of active waveguide cavities that are coherently coupled using a passive waveguide cavity. The active and passive waveguide cavities are of sufficient length so that multiple supermodes and multiple peaks in the coupling coefficient are created over the width of the gain spectra. The supermodes are gain flattened so that the one supermode that coincides with a peak in the coupling coefficient will oscillate. Tunability is achieved by changing the optical path length of either the passive or active waveguide cavities to match a different supermode to a different coupling coefficient peak.
