Abstract: An improvement to the current-carrying components of a lamp includes two filaments connected to two different electrodes and one common electrode, and a switch for directing current through the secondary filament upon the failure of the primary filament. Normally, the current flows through the primary filament. The switch in one embodiment is a wire that does not conduct when the primary filament is operational but conducts on the failure of the primary filament to shunt the current to the secondary filament. The wire is an oxide metal wrapped around two of the three electrodes inside the glass envelop of the lamp. When the primary filament fails, the open circuit voltage breaks across the oxide layer to weld the wire to the electrodes and bypass the primary filament.

Abstract: An improvement to the usable lifetime of a lamp includes the use of a primary filament, a backup filament, and a means to switch portions of the backup filament into the current flow path after a portion of the primary filament open circuits. Using bypass shunts, which do not become electrically conductive until a portion of the primary filament open circuits, an open circuited portion of the primary filament can be electrically replaced with an associated backup filament portion to keep the lamp lit. The shunts in one embodiment are made of oxidized wire and are wrapped around the primary and backup filaments, in a spaced-apart relation, forming filament pairs consisting of a primary filament segment and its associated backup filament segment. In another embodiment, support brackets are used to not only support the primary and backup filaments, but are also used to provide the bypass shunt function as well.

Abstract: Through the use of a variety of reinforcing structures, a ribbon light string is described that can be shaped in decorative ways, and it is made of a material that, due to its coloring and/or texture, can become camouflaged into its environment, or of a material that is preferably reflective and compliments the light from the lamp bulbs of the light string. Essentially, the ribbon light string is a reinforced ribbon having a passage therethrough for carrying substantially all, of the non-illuminating portion, of a light string while allowing the illuminating portion to be exposed. To facilitate the shaping of the ribbon, several embodiments are described including the use of pliable ribbon material; the use of at least one reinforcing wire running through the longitudinal extent of the passage; or the use of a “ribbon wire” type conductor for the light string. Also described are the use of novel hole and flap arrangements and lamp bulb/lamp base configurations.

Abstract: A lamp having a light bulb connected to a base insertable into a light socket in such a way that insertion breaks an electrical circuit between two spring terminals inside the socket and reestablishes it through the lead wires on the light bulb. The light bulb has a filament and two lean wires connected to the filaments. The filaments extend from the bottom of the base and are bent outwardly and upwardly around the base. The bulb with its base are insertable into the light socket. Wires from a source of electricity enter the socket and form electrical terminals, one on either side of the socket. Two spring terminals within the socket are biased toward each other and will conduct when supplied with an electrical potential unless separated. A protrusion on the base of the light bulb separates the spring terminals. Thus, in a light string where the lights are electrically in series, removal of a light bulb of the present invention will not cause the string to go out.

Abstract: A single circuit element, referred to as a solid state rectifying fuse (SSRF), rectifies an incoming AC signal and opens the circuit if a programmed maximum current level is reached. The anode or cathode depending upon the particular application is designed with a plurality of conductors strips in electrical contact with the P or N region, respectively. Conductor strips are composed of a material that melts open if the current limit is exceeded. Conductor strips are designed to have a lower total current handling capacity than that of the PN junction so that the current is reduced or terminated before the PN junction can “short.” Depending on the desired maximum current of the SSRF, the current limit can be adjusted downward by burning out or severing some of the conductors. In this sense, it is a programmable diode.

Abstract: A light for use in a string of lights has a lamp and a light socket that may include a parallel group device that may perform a variety of functions. One of those functions is to serve as a resistive element to regulate voltage and current to keep other lights in a group of lights arranged to be electrically in parallel lighted to the same intensity in the event one of the lights burns out or is removed. Another function of the parallel group device is to control the lamp in the socket so that it lights and goes out on command. The socket is designed to be closed against moisture and to be easily manufactured by hand or by machine. It includes piercing terminals that, when pressed into the electrical wires that run from light to light in the string, allow electrical connection with the lamp leads and the parallel group device leads.

Abstract: An improved friction-fitted light and light socket where the base of the light has a resilient, beveled flange that deforms on insertion of the base into the light socket, thus resisting removal. To facilitate removal, the wall of the socket has a cutout portion dimensioned to receive a small tool, such as the end of the flathead screw driver, and thereby provide access to the base just below the flange so that the light can be pried free of the light socket.
