An automatic replacement circuit is provided for the replacement of burnt-out filaments as well as a method for implementing the replacement of incandescent filaments. The replacement circuit includes a pulse generator which operates independently of the activated filament to feed continuous feed pulses to a counter circuit while a separate resetting pulse circuit delivers resetting pulses to the counter unit in dependence on the current flowing through the filament. The resetting pulses cancel the feed pulses. In the absence of resetting pulses, the feed pulses accumulate and upon reaching a predetermined amount, trigger a trigger selector circuit for activating the next filament.

A filament switching device is arranged to be mounted within the screw base of a conventional, dual-filament, incandescent light bulb. The device has a frame which branches around the evacuation tube of the bulb thereby allowing sufficient room for switching components within the device and yet avoiding interference with the evacuation tube of the bulb. Mounted within the frame of the switching device is a fixed contact and a cantilevered contact. The cantilevered contact can swing in a direction transverse to the evacuation tube to make electrical contact with the fixed contact. The cantilevered contact is held separated from the fixed contact by a fusible conductor. Upon failure of one of the filaments in the bulb, a surge of current flows through the fusible conductor, parting it and allowing the cantilevered contact to swing into electrical contact with the fixed contact. This swing of the cantilevered contact substitutes the failed filament with the other filament.

A multiple filament incandescent lightbulb automatically places an unused alternate filament in a closed electric circuit upon rupture of an active filament. The alternate filament is placed in a closed circuit by release of an elastically deformed switching member originally held in place by the active filament.

An improvement to the current-carrying components of a lamp includes two filaments connected to two different electrodes and one common electrode, and a switch for directing current through the secondary filament upon the failure of the primary filament. Normally, the current flows through the primary filament. The switch in one embodiment is a wire that does not conduct when the primary filament is operational but conducts on the failure of the primary filament to shunt the current to the secondary filament. The wire is an oxide metal wrapped around two of the three electrodes inside the glass envelop of the lamp. When the primary filament fails, the open circuit voltage breaks across the oxide layer to weld the wire to the electrodes and bypass the primary filament.
