Abstract: Described herein is the identification of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase upregulation in cystic kidney diseases. Also described is the use of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase inhibitors for preventing the progression and/or treatment of cystic kidney diseases. Other aspects described provide medicaments for preventing the progression and/or treating cystic kidney diseases, and methods of diagnosing cystic kidney disease.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for manipulating fluids. The apparatus may include a microfluidic structure including inlet channels (1 and 2) and outlet channels (306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 312, 313, and 314) oriented among bifurcated (5), trifurcated (6) and merging junctions (7 and 8). The apparatus splits and merges fluids flowing in the channels to produce successive dilutions of the fluids within the outlet channels. Multiple apparatus may be combined in serial, parallel, combined serial and parallel and/or stacked configurations. One or more apparatus may be used alone or to provide various devices or chambers with the diluted fluids.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are capillary fabrication devices comprising living cells within a support medium. Culture of the cells produces viable lumenized capillary networks with natural or pre-determined geometries and ECM and basement membrane associated with the capillary networks. The capillary networks and the ECM and basement membrane detachable from the capillary networks are useful for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to methods for treatment or prevention of retinal vascular disease by photocoagulation. More specifically, this disclosure relates to an improved technique for the placement of retinal burns so as to prevent the development of hypoxia and progression of ischemia in retinal tissue, including the macula. The methods can also be employed to prevent potential ischemic tissue damage in diabetic, pre-diabetic or other patients with ischemic retinal vascular disease, or those at risk of ischemic retinal vascular disease.
