R IS AN ALLYLIC OR SUBSTITUTED ALLYLIC GROUP, M IS A METAL OF GROUPS IV-A TO VI-A, N IS THE VALENCY OF M, X IS AN INTEGER FROM 1 TO N-1 AND Y IS AN INTEGER LESS THAN X AND HAS A VALUE FROM 0 TO N-2. THE PROCESS ALLOWS READY CONTROL OF THE DEGREE OF HALOGENATION OF THE PRODUCT. THE REACTION MUST BE CARRIED OUT IN THE ABSENCE OF MOISTURE AND OXYGEN, PREFERABLY IN A NON-REACTING SOLVENT.
