Thin, pinhole-free, adherent, colored polymeric coatings and articles are produced by plasma polymerization followed by a heat treatment. The polymer precursor is mixed with a dye or pigment and shaped into a self-supporting thin article or applied to a substrate. The coating or article is then polymerized under plasma conditions created by an applied electrical field. Subsequent heat treatment further cures the polymer and makes the coating adherent to the substrate.

Disclosed are improved abrasion-resistant plasma coatings adapted to be coated onto substrates including polymeric substrates, glass, and metal. The method of plasma coating the substrates comprises restricting the monomer to be a silane, disiloxane, silazane, or disilazane which is substituted with at least one alkoxy group per silicon atom wherein the alkoxy group is selected from methoxy groups, ethoxy groups, and mixtures thereof. The plasma coating is applied under plasma coating conditions for a time adequate to form an abrasion-resistant coating having sufficient thickness so as to possess a Taber abrasion resistance of less than 10% haze development after 100 cycles. Abrasion resistance of some disclosed coatings is less than about 5% development after 1,000 cycles.

Disclosed is a method for fluorinating the surface of a polymeric solid for improving a surface property of such solid while substantially maintaining the bulk physical properties of said solid. This method comprises contacting the polymeric solid with dilute fluorine gas at a temperature not substantially above about room temperature and at a pressure not substantially above about 1 atmosphere for a time adequate to partially fluorinate said solid surface by forming stable fluorocarbon groups wherein the ratio of --CF.sub.2 -- groups to --CHF-- groups is not substantially above about 1:1, the proportion of oxygen-providing groups presend during said fluorination being restricted to an amount whereby substantially no oxidation of said surface occurs.
