Organic photoconductive compositions containing a methine dye present in the J-aggregated state and which spectrally respond primarily in the J-band are described. The resultant compositions can be used as photoconductors or as sensitizers for other photoconductors.

THE LIGHT-ABSORBING MATERIALS COMPRISE COLORED COMPONENTS WHICH ARE DECOLORIZED BY VARIOUS FORMS OF ENERGY, SUCH AS, FOR EXAMPLE HEAT. THE NOVEL LIGHT-ABSORBING MATERIALS ARE USEFUL IN ANTIHALATION LAYERS PARTICULARLY ADAPTED FOR PHOTOTOGRAPHIC ELEMENTS DESIGNED FOR DEVELOPMENT WITH HEAT.

Polymethine dyes, including cyanine, carbocyanine, dicarbocyanine, merocyanine and styryl dyes, are useful as photographic silver halide sensitizing dyes and are prepared from reactive heterocyclic quaternary salts, such as 2-methyl-3formylethyl benzothiazolium iodide, by dye condensation techniques. These dyes are N-substituted with groups including an N, Alpha -alkenylene bridge and alkyl groups whose terminal carbon atom is additionally substituted with acyl, sulfo, 1hydroxy-1-sulfoalkyl, acetal and thioacetal groups including cyclic species and 1-hydrazonoalkyl groups. The dyes containing reactive hydrazonoalkyl substituents are advantageous when used in conjunction with internal image emulsions, such as in the preparation of direct-print photographic elements.

Rigidized carbocyanine dyes including at least two nitrogencontaining heterocyclic nuclei with a nitrogen atom of each nucleus joined by a 5 carbon polyene chain, each heterocyclic nucleus also having the non-metallic atoms to complete, in combination with the two nitrogen atoms and the carbon atoms of the intervening polyene chain, a nucleus which is either 3,4,5a, 6,7,8-hexahydro-4aH-pyrano(3,2-c;5,6-c'')dipyridine or an analog wherein the member in the 5-position is alternatively one such as a sulfur atom, a nitrogen atom, a selenium atom, etc, are useful as spectral sensitizing dyes for silver halide. Since they are structurally rigidized, their absorption envelope is more selective, and they exhibit high stability in solution and an increased fluorescence efficiency when compared to similar, but non-rigidized dyes. The high degree of fluorescence makes these compounds advantageous also as textile dyes, plastics dyes and colorant dyes for related situations including cosmetics, e.g., nail polish, facial coloring compositions, lipsticks or the like. Additionally, these rigidized carbocyanine dyes are desirable as colorants for coatings like paints, lacquers and the like when dispersed or dissolved therein.

Novel polymethine cyanine dyes are derived from certain enamines containing a cyclohexene ring having a reactive methylene or methyl substituent thereon. These dyes are spectral sensitizers for photographic silver halide emulsions and sensitize such emulsions up to wavelengths ranging about from 550 mu to 770 mu. Many of the dyes are useful sensitizers for the red to near infrared regions of the spectrum.
