摘要: An ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines is provided. The ignition apparatus is equipped with an ECU. The ECU monitors a path length of a discharge of a spark for a period of time in which a second circuit delivers or inputs energy in the form of a threshold value determination. When the path length has become too short, the ECU determines that ignition is expected to be delayed and then selects a special mode to control the delay of the ignition. The ECU increase a target value of an energy input amount. This enables the delay of ignition resulting from a short extension of the path length to be minimized. The ignition apparatus equipped with the second circuit to continue the discharge of sparks is, thus, capable of reducing a variation in ignition without the need for uniformly increasing the energy input amount.

摘要: A spark plug for an internal combustion engine includes a housing, an insulator, and a center electrode. The center electrode includes an inside electrode portion and an outside electrode portion. The housing includes a ground electrode projecting from a distal end portion of the housing toward the distal end side of the plug at a part in a plug circumferential direction. The outside electrode portion projects along a surface of the insulator tip in a direction away from a boundary with the inside electrode portion and includes a projection, which is capable of causing an electrical discharge between the ground electrode and the outside electrode portion. The projection is formed in a region in the plug circumferential direction. The projection and the ground electrode are located at positions different from each other in the plug circumferential direction.

At least one of the exposed portion and the insulator protruding portion includes a flow inlet that is open on an outer circumferential surface thereof, a flow outlet that is open toward the discharge gap, and a communication passage communicating between the flow inlet and the flow outlet.

The electromagnetic wave power supply is configured to generate high frequency power at a number of different frequencies. The power supply control unit outputs at least one of the plurality of high frequency powers generated by the electromagnetic wave power supply as the electromagnetic wave power.

摘要: An ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine provided with an ignition coil and a spark plug. An ECU enables operation of a plurality of continuous discharges in the spark plug and also detects a flow speed of a combustible air/fuel mixture. In a first discharge, a supply of a primary current terminates the first discharge, with energy remaining in the ignition coil, from an initiation of the ignition to an initiation of the spark plug, when the detected flow speed exceeds a predetermined first threshold. Thereafter, a second discharge is performed by shutting off the primary current.

摘要: An ignition device includes a spark plug, a measurement value detector, an electrical breakdown determiner, an AC voltage applying section, and a first changing section. The measurement value detector includes primary and secondary coils, and detects at least one measurement value among an ignition coil, a primary current, a primary voltage, a secondary current, and a secondary voltage. The electrical breakdown determiner determines whether a discharge has become an electrical breakdown state based on the measurement value. The AC voltage applying section applies an AC voltage of a first predetermined frequency that causes voltage resonance to the primary coil. The first changing section changes the frequency of the AC voltage to a second predetermined frequency that can maintain the electrical breakdown state and is lower in frequency than the first predetermined frequency when it is determined that the discharge has become the electrical breakdown state.

摘要: An ignition apparatus includes an ignition plug, a boost transformer, an ignition power source and a measurement unit. The ignition plug has a center electrode and a ground electrode. The boost transformer supplies the ignition plug with electric power generated in a secondary coil upon supply of AC power from the ignition power source to a primary coil. The measurement unit measures the discharge voltage of the ignition plug. The ignition power source includes a discharge state determining unit that determines the discharge state of the ignition plug based on the measured discharge voltage and a current controlling unit that controls electric current supplied to the primary coil. When a discharge path formed between the center and ground electrodes of the ignition plug is determined by the discharge state determining unit as being in an over-extended state, the current controlling unit reduces the electric current supplied to the primary coil.
