    Abstract: Embodiments herein describe an electro-optic waveguide having a multi-mode multi-pass phase shifter (MMPS) tuner, one or more two-mode Bragg gratings, and one or more selective evanescent couplers. An input signal having a fundamental mode is reflected by the one or more Bragg gratings and tuned by the MMPS tuner. In this manner, the electro-optic waveguide isolates the higher order modes of the input signal. The one or more selective evanescent couplers capture an output signal having the highest order mode and reduces the mode of the output signal to the fundamental mode.

    Abstract: An optical coupler and a method performed by the optical coupler are described. The optical coupler includes an interlayer dielectric, a waveguide disposed within the interlayer dielectric, and an epoxy disposed on the interlayer dielectric and in the first cavity such that the epoxy defines an upper surface and a bottom surface. The interlayer dielectric includes a first surface and a second surface coupled to the first surface. The first surface and the second surface define a first cavity in the interlayer dielectric. The waveguide emits an optical signal through the first surface. The bottom surface is positioned between the interlayer dielectric and the upper surface. The epoxy directs the optical signal from the first surface to the second surface. The second surface and the epoxy direct a first portion of the optical signal through the upper surface.

    Abstract: The present disclosure describes photodetectors with multiple inputs and methods of operating photodetectors with multiple inputs. An apparatus includes a substrate, an optical absorber, an optical device, and a tuner. The optical absorber is positioned on the substrate. The optical device produces a first optical signal and a second optical signal from an optical signal received at a first port of the optical device and directs the first optical signal and the second optical signal to the optical absorber. The tuner adjusts a first phase of the first optical signal and a second phase of the second optical signal such that a reflection of the first optical signal from the optical absorber destructively interferes with a reflection of the second optical signal from the optical absorber at the first port.

    Abstract: An optical modulator may include a lower waveguide, an upper waveguide, and a dielectric layer disposed therebetween. When a voltage potential is created between the lower and upper waveguides, these layers form a silicon-insulator-silicon capacitor (also referred to as SISCAP) guide that provides efficient, high-speed optical modulation of an optical signal passing through the modulator. In one embodiment, at least one of the waveguides includes a respective ridge portion aligned at a charge modulation region which may aid in confining the optical mode laterally (e.g., in the width direction) in the optical modulator. In another embodiment, ridge portions may be formed on both the lower and the upper waveguides. These ridge portions may be aligned in a vertical direction (e.g., a thickness direction) so that ridges overlap which may further improve optical efficiency by centering an optical mode in the charge modulation region.
