Abstract: The present disclosure provides pluggable optical modules that are prevented from reaching potentially dangerous temperatures when a fiber optic connector is not present and engaged with the associated module housing. Further, the present disclosure provides fiber optic connectors and/or pluggable optical modules that incorporate a port heat shield external to the associated face plate when the pluggable optical modules and fiber optic connectors are engaged, thereby preventing a user from contacting potentially hot and dangerous metallic surfaces of the module housings, as well as providing access for cooling air flow. The solutions presented herein are equally applicable to fixed optical ports and connectors as well.

Abstract: A coherent receiver adapted to operate as an Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA) includes an optical front end adapted to receive an optical signal and to mix the optical signal with a local laser; a photodetector block coupled to the optical front end and adapted to receive an output of the optical front end and provide an output corresponding to spectral components of the optical signal; and a controller coupled to the optical front end and the photodetector block, wherein the controller is adapted to operate in an OSA mode to sweep the local laser across a portion of optical spectrum to perform an OSA measurement while not performing data demodulation.

Abstract: Systems and methods include a transmitter configured to communicate over an optical link to a receiver; and a controller configured to, with the transmitter and the receiver operating in a first operating mode, obtain measurements related to operation over the optical link, determine statistical properties of the optical link based on the measurements, wherein the statistical properties relate to conditions on the optical link, and set a second operating mode of one or more of the transmitter and the receiver based on the determined statistical properties. Each of the first operating mode and the second operating mode refer to associated settings in one or more of the transmitter and the receiver, and there is a trade-off between the first operating mode and the second operating mode and associated margin on the optical link.

Abstract: Optical protection devices are provided for protecting client equipment in an optical communication system. According to one implementation, a protection device includes a passive optical coupler configured to combine optical signals from a plurality of input paths, where the passive optical coupler is further configured to provide the output signals along an optical output path. The exemplary protection device further includes one or more interrupters configured to allow at most one input from a plurality of optical inputs via the plurality of input paths to be provided to the passive optical coupler at one time.
