Abstract:
A time division multiplexing (TDM) facility is presented for time division multiplexing at least two inter-system channel (ISC) data streams to create a TDM multiplexed data stream. The TDM multiplexed data stream can be forwarded across the network over a single wavelength of a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network. The TDM multiplex data stream may be wavelength division multiplexed with one or more other TDM multiplexed data stream. Different protocols are presented for maintaining disparity balance within the ISC data streams depending upon whether a given sequence in one of the data streams is an idle sequence, frame sequence or continuous sequence.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for initializing an end-to-end link in a fiber optic communications system in which a pair of nodes interconnect a pair of end devices. A first node, upon initializing a device link segment with an end device to which the node is coupled, sends a signal to the other node over a network link segment indicating that the sending node has initialized its device link segment. The first node completes initialization of the end-to-end link upon receiving a signal from the other node over the network link segment indicating that the other node has initialized its device link segment. In an alternative initialization scheme, a node momentarily operates its data channel in a loopback mode to allow its end device to initialize the device link segment in accordance with a predetermined protocol before returning to a transparent mode.
Abstract:
Methods, systems, and storage media enable the transport of InfiniBand (IB) data over a synchronous optical network (SONET) using generic frame procedure (GFP) encapsulation. User protocol identifiers for IB data in a GFP-SONET frame are defined. A process for maintaining running disparity of data during GFP encapsulation of IB data is provided. Data rate adaptation for this encapsulation is also provided. A simple, cost-effective scheme for data rate compression ensures that IB data is contained within a minimum SONET data rate traffic.
Abstract:
A system and a method for initializing a communication link for transmitting a data stream from a first computer through a synchronous optical communication network to a second computer are provided. The method includes transmitting a first request message in a first GFP data frame to a second computer. The method further includes transmitting a second acknowledgement message in a second GFP data frame from the second computer to the first computer. The method further includes initializing the communication link between the first computer and the second computer in response to the acknowledgement message.

Abstract:
A data mapping device, a method, and an article of manufacture for adjusting a transmission rate of ISC words are provided. The GFP data mapping device has a FIFO buffer and a transceiver operably coupled to the FIFO buffer. The method includes reading first and second ISC words from the FIFO buffer that were received from a transmitting device. The method further includes determining whether a first number of ISC words stored in the FIFO buffer are greater than a second predetermined number indicating an over-running condition. The method further includes determining whether the first and second ISC words indicate either an ISC continuous sequence of words or an ISC idle sequence of words, if the first number is greater than the second predetermined number. The method further includes deleting the first and second ISC words if the first and second ISC words indicate either the ISC continuous sequence of words or the ISC idle sequence of words. The method further includes reading a third ISC word from the FIFO buffer and transmitting the third ISC word from the transceiver.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for transmitting signals from a plurality of input channels over a TDM optical network, where each of the input channels contains an optical data signal and an electrical control signal containing control information relating to the optical data signal. In accordance with the invention, respective optical receivers convert the optical data signals to respective electrical data signals, which a TDM data multiplexer time-multiplexes to generate a multiplexed data signal. A TDM control signal multiplexer time-multiplexes the electrical control signals to generate a multiplexed control signal that is combined with said multiplexed data signal to generate a composite electrical signal. An optical transmitter generates a composite optical signal from the composite electrical signal that is transmitted over the network, optionally after WDM multiplexing it with other composite optical signals. The corresponding reverse operations are performed at the receiving end to regenerate the original data and control signals.
Abstract:
Flow control in a data center Ethernet (DCE) network is managed between a source node and a destination node separated by an extended distance. An initiation sequence between the source node and the destination node is intercepted. The imitation sequence is for determining buffer credits available for receiving packets in the source node and the destination node. Replies are generated to the source node and the destination node indicating buffer credits available in at least one extended data interface interspersed between the source node and the destination node. The initiation sequence is completed based on the replies from the extended data interface.
Abstract:
Techniques for measuring optical modulation amplitude (OMA) are disclosed. For example, a technique for measuring an OMA value associated with an input signal includes the following steps/operations. The input signal is applied to a photodetector, wherein the photodetector is calibrated to have a given responsivity value R, and further wherein the photodetector generates an output signal in response to the input signal. The output signal from the photodetector is applied to a radio frequency (RF) power meter, wherein the RF power meter measures the root mean squared (RMS) power value of the output signal received from the photodetector. The OMA value associated with the input signal is determined in response to the root mean squared (RMS) power value measured by the RF power meter. The OMA value may be determined as a function of a factor F derived from a relationship between an amplitude of a data signal and the RMS value of the data signal.
Abstract:
Congestion is adaptively controlled in a data center Ethernet (DCE) network. Packets are received over at least one virtual lane in the DCE network. An absolute or relative packet arrival rate is computed over a time period. The absolute or relative packet arrival rate is compared to at least a first threshold and a second threshold. If the absolute or relative packet arrival rate increases beyond the first threshold, the packet transmission rate is caused to decrease. If the absolute or relative packet arrival rate is less than a second threshold, the packet transmission rate is caused to increase.
