摘要: An iontophoretic drug delivery device of the present invention includes a power source and an electrode assembly containing at least two electrodes, in electrical contact with a first reservoir and a second reservoir. The present invention also includes at least three electrodes in a three electrode embodiment, with the third electrode in electrical contact with a third reservoir. In either embodiment, the first reservoir and the second reservoir contain an active agent to be delivered to an applied area of a patient. The present invention also includes in its two electrode embodiment a switch for reversing the flow of current or in its three electrode embodiment a switch for switching the flow of current, so as to reduce sensation. The devices also include a timer for controlling the amount of time the electrical current flows in each direction. In this way, the devices are suitable for use to deliver an active agent to the applied area approximate the first reservoir when the electrical current flows in one direction for a first period of time and to deliver an active agent to the applied area approximate the second reservoir when the electrical current flows in the other direction during a second period of time. Thus, reversing polarity or switching the flow of current between electrodes, and iontophoresing thereunder below the sensation threshold results in sensation anesthesia so that the current can be raised to deliver the drug without sensation.

摘要: This invention concerns a flow apparatus and method for the detection of particles in a sample. Particles are moved, substantially one at a time, in a fluid flow stream. An incident beam of illumination is provided so as to be directed at the particles in the flow stream. Data associated with each moving particle as it passes through the beam of illumination is detected. A class of particles is established, these particles having common characteristics based on the data detected from such class of particles. The data is then stored. Such stored data is compared to data detected from sample particles of an unknown class. A determination is then made that particles from the unknown class belong to the established class as a result of matching respective data.

摘要: Systems and methods for measuring the flow of a liquid along a conduit are disclosed. A heat source applies thermal energy to a portion of a liquid flowing along a conduit thereby elevating its temperature. A light source generates a first beam that passes through the liquid in the conduit downstream from the position of application of the thermal energy and an optical detector receives this beam in combination with a second beam that is not passed through the liquid in the conduit and measures a change in intensity of a combined beam. The time required for the heated portion of the liquid to move from the point of application of thermal energy to the point at which the beam passes through the liquid is measured. This measured time, along with the distance of separation of the heat source and the optical sensing means permits calculation of the velocity of the liquid in the conduit.

摘要: An iontophorectic electrode has a plurality of ion transmitters for establishing electric field lines in an area and a plurality of receivers for accepting ions flowing along the field lines. A plurality of shields are located to resist ion flow between adjacent transmitters and receivers. The transmitters, shields and receivers are in at least a sequence of transmitter, shield, receiver, shield. The electric field lines emanate substantially in one direction and return in substantially the opposite direction. The transmitters and receivers have matrix structures with space to contain ionic medication and electrolyte, respectively. A support for holding a plurality of sequences has current carrying contacts exposed to connect the transmitters and receivers in circuit with a source of electrical power. The preferred method includes establishing an electric field with lines of energy between a plurality of first and second conductors of ions and then passing ions along the energy lines between the conductors. Thereafter the method includes restricting the flow of ions to paths between adjacent first and second conductors and then positioning the first conductors relative to the second conductors so that the energy lines emanate from the first substantially in one direction return to adjacent second conductors in the opposite direction.

摘要: A flow cytometry apparatus for determining one or more characteristics of particles or the like flowing in a liquid stream includes a nozzle for generating a liquid flow stream for moving particles therethrough substantially one at a time. An arc lamp provides a beam of incoherent light to illuminate the particles moving in the flow stream. A prism in the light beam modifies non-uniform incoherent light, as provided by said arc lamp, to a more uniform beam of illumination which is directed to the flowing particles. A detector is included for detecting light with respect to each moving particle and for associating the detected light with one or more characteristics of the particles.
