    Abstract: A directional acoustic device that has an acoustic source or an acoustic receiver, and a conduit to which the acoustic source or acoustic receiver is acoustically coupled and within which acoustic energy travels in a propagation direction from the acoustic source or to the acoustic receiver, the conduit having finite extent at which the conduit structure ends. The conduit has a radiating portion that has a radiating surface with leak openings that define controlled leaks through which acoustic energy radiated from the source into the conduit can leak to the outside environment or through which acoustic energy in the outside environment can leak into the conduit. The only path for acoustic energy in the conduit to reach the external environment or acoustic energy in the external environment to enter the conduit is through the controlled leaks. The leak openings define leaks having a first extent in the propagation direction, and also define leaks having a second extent at locations along the conduit with a constant time delay relative to the location of the source or receiver. The extents of the leaks are determinative of the lowest frequency where useful directivity control is obtained. The lowest frequency of directivity control for the leak in the propagation direction is within three octaves of the lowest frequency of directivity control for the leak with constant time delay.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing a loudspeaker includes creating a dual-layered fabric having an acoustic resistance by attaching a first fabric having a first acoustic resistance to a second fabric having a second acoustic resistance lower than the first acoustic resistance. The method further includes applying a coating material to a first portion of the dual-layered fabric. The coating material forms a pattern on the first portion of the dual-layered fabric that changes the acoustic resistance of the dual-layered fabric along at least one of: a length and radius of the dual-layered fabric.

    Abstract: An audio system for a television using a pipe type passive directional acoustic device mounted in a television cabinet. The slotted pipe type passive directional acoustic device includes a first acoustic driver, acoustically coupled to a pipe to radiate acoustic energy into the pipe. The first pipe includes an elongated opening along at least a portion of the length of the pipe. Acoustically resistive material is in the opening. Pressure waves are radiated to the environment through the opening. The pressure waves are characterized by a volume velocity. The pipe, the opening, and the acoustically resistive material are configured so that the volume velocity is substantially constant along the length of the pipe. The passive directional acoustic devices directionally radiate sound waves laterally from the television cabinet.

    Abstract: An in-ear headphone comprises an earbud body constructed and arranged for positioning in an ear canal of a wearer, and configured to have a distal end farther into the ear canal than a proximal end. The earbud body includes a cavity and an opening to the cavity. The in-ear headphone further comprises a transducer in the opening to the cavity, a portion of the transducer facing outward from the opening; a microphone at the distal end of the earbud body; an earbud tip on the earbud body and complying with a surface of the earbud body; and an acoustically resistive mesh structure at a distal end of the earbud tip. The mesh structure covers the microphone and the portion of the transducer facing outward from the opening.
