Abstract: An atherectomy system includes a drive mechanism adapted to rotatably actuate an atherectomy burr and a controller that is adapted to operate the drive mechanism in a first operating mode in which the atherectomy burr is operated at a speed reference and with a predetermined torque limit. The controller is adapted to determine when the atherectomy burr becomes stuck while in the first operating mode and is further adapted to, when the atherectomy burr becomes stuck, operate the drive mechanism in a second operating mode that is different from the first operating mode.

Abstract: Medical systems and methods for making and using medical systems are disclosed. Example medical systems may include an atherectomy system configured to engage and remove plaque from walls in vessels of a vascular system. The atherectomy system may include a drive shaft, a rotational tip coupled to an end of the drive shaft, a motor coupled to the drive shaft to rotate the rotational tip, and a controller configured to control a motor state of the motor. The controller may adjust a range of possible load outputs from the motor and/or a maximum load output from the motor to account for external loads acting on the drive shaft and/or rotational tip rotated by the motor and facilitate passing an occlusion in a vasculature of a patient.

Abstract: A medical device may include an elongate tubular member defining a tube lumen, and an expandable member disposed on the distal portion of the elongate tubular member including a lumen that is in fluid communication with the tube lumen. The expandable member is configured to expand from a collapsed delivery configuration to a distally-open expanded configuration and establish apposition with a vessel wall. A valve member in fluid communication with the tube lumen, and configured to selectively block and selectively allow for flow through the tube lumen. The device may be percutaneously-deployable downstream of a treatment site within a body lumen and may allow for selective removal and/or draining of fluid and/or material, such as embolic material, from a body lumen.
