摘要: An athermal package for fiber photonic devices includes a ferrule to attach the optical fiber to the package. The ferrule has an opening to receive the optical fiber. The ferule is collapsed to attach the optical fiber to the athermal package. Alternatively, the athermal package uses adhesive bonds disposed in pockets of the package. The pockets have a narrow end and a wide end, with the narrow ends facing each other. The adhesive bonds are disposed in the pockets in contact the narrow ends of the pockets but not with the wide ends. The narrow ends physically confine the adhesive bonds so that if the bonds expand or contract due to environmental conditions (or the curing process), the adhesive either expands or contracts near the wide ends of the pockets. This allows the strain on the optical fiber segment between the bonds to remain substantially constant.

摘要: A communication terminal including a transceiver arranged to discontinuously transmit data from the terminal; an image sensor including a plurality of image-sensing regions, each image-sensing region being capable of being reset, and subsequently being read to provide data indicative of light incident on the image-sensing region since it was last reset; and image capture means coupled to the image capture device and arranged to capture image data from each of the image-sensing regions by resetting and subsequently reading the image-sensing regions, and being arranged to, when the transceiver is in operation for discontinuous data transmission, reset and/or read at least some of the image-sensing regions only when the transceiver is not transmitting data from the terminal.

摘要: An adaptor for a three point hitch of a tractor allows the adaptor to attach to the hitch bar of a trailer without the necessity of vertical or horizontal adjustment of the position of the tractor relative to the trailer. The adaptor comprises a vertical post having an upper end attached to a centre arm of the three point hitch. A pair of side arms of the adaptor attached to the lower arms of the three point hitch. A J-shaped hook member has a longer leg projecting through a slot in the post and a shorter leg which abuts against a rear face of the post in the hitching position. The hook engages around a loop attached to the trailer. A cylinder coupled to a forward end of the longer leg can actuate pivotal movement of the hook about a pin attached across the post to move the hook from the hitching position to a release position.

摘要: Paraffin alkylation using solid, particulate catalyst is carried out by preparing an alkane-catalyst mixture in a wash zone, passing the alkane-catalyst mixture to a plug flow reactor where a minor amount of olefin is introduced to contact the alkane-catalyst mixture and react to form alkylate and the alkane-catalyst-alkylate mixture is passed through the reactor with a minimum of back mixing to restrict the reaction of alkylate with olefin, thus substantially preventing polymerization. The alkane-catalyst-alkylate mixture, substantially free of olefin is passed to a disengaging zone where the liquid is removed and the solid particulate catalyst is recovered and returned to the wash zone for recycle. The alkane is present in the reactor in sufficient molar excess to react substantially all of the olefin. Any unreacted isoalkane is recycled to the reactor with make-up isoalkane added to maintain the molar excess. The preferred catalyst is an acid washed silica treated with antimony pentafluoride and more preferably treated with alkane at low temperature, e.g. -30.degree. to -160.degree. C.

摘要: A method detects the proportion of combustible gas in a mixture of air with a measuring device which operates by both the heat-tone and heat-conductivity methods. The method permits measurement in the full concentration range with a high degree of accuracy and the lowest possible energy consumption. The measuring device is made small and light and its sensor has a long service life. The method uses one single sensor which operates at a low temperature in the heat-conductivity mode or alternatively, catalytically active at a higher temperature in the heat-tone mode. If the measurement provides a result below a reference value or within a reference value window, measurement continues in the more accurate heat-tone mode. When the gas concentration increases during measurement, in order to avoid ambiguity of the measuring signal and damage to the sensor above a load-limit value, measurement again takes place in the heat-conductivity mode by reducing the temperature of the sensor.
