Abstract: A tag with sufficient variability is generated. The tag facilitates quick location and processing within a facility. During generation, a matrix representative of a possible tag may be tested for sufficient variability. A two-dimensional matrix representing the possible tag may include different bit values at different positions. A variability metric of the matrix is performed to check the variability between adjacent elements of the matrix. This variability metric of the matrix is then compared against a variability threshold value. If the variability metric of the matrix falls below the threshold value, the matrix is flagged as unusable. If the variability metric of the matrix exceeds the threshold value, the matrix can be used to generate a tag with sufficient variability. Once generated, the tag can be presented and affixed to an item or object to help identify and locate the item within the facility.

Abstract: Tags comprising marks arranged in a predetermined pattern are applied to an item. The marks are made with an ink that fluoresces under infrared (IR) light. A camera with a filter acquires an image of the light emitted by the fluorescence of the ink. This image is processed to determine a portion of the image in which the tag is located. Once located, that portion is processed to rectify and align the tag. This rectified image is then processed to read out tag data that is encoded by the arrangement of marks. The tag data may then be used to identify the item, designate shipping information, and so forth.

Abstract: A facility is equipped with floor tiles. Each tile is equipped with transmitters that transmit on specific frequencies. A particular set of frequencies identifies a particular floor tile and a particular segment on the floor tile. A user electromagnetically couples to one or more antennas of the tile, acting as a signal path for the signals on the particular set of frequencies. A receiver detects these signals, and the information about the frequencies detected and relative signal strength may be used to determine a location of the user within the facility. Receivers in the floor tiles allow a first tile to transmit its set of frequencies and a second tile to receive the set of frequencies and determine where the user has stepped from. By concatenating these steps a path of the user may be determined. Receivers in shelves facilitate disambiguation of one user from another when interacting with items.

Abstract: A tag comprises cells represented by marks, such as white and black, arranged in a predetermined pattern. Reference cells are used to determine the edges of the tag and orientation, while others are used to encode data and error correction data. During processing, a tag is detected based on a variability metric within a given region of an image exceeding a threshold value. Once detected, the orientation of the tag is determined using the reference cells. Confidence values, indicative of a likelihood that the cell is a particular cell value, such as white or black, are determined for each cell in a first set of cell values. If the first set is invalid, the cell values for a set of lowest confidence cell values are inverted to produce a second set of cell values. The second set is tested, and if valid, is used to produce output data.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to an item-identifying, mobile cart that may be utilized by a user in a materials handling facility to automatically identify a user operating the cart and items that the user places into a basket of the cart. In addition, the cart may update a virtual shopping cart of the identified user to include items taken by the user. The mobile cart may include multiple imaging devices and oriented such that their respective optical axes are directed towards an interior of a perimeter of the top of the basket, and above the top of the basket. The mobile cart may also include an imaging device oriented away from the basket such that a user operating the mobile cart may scan a user identifier using this imaging device to enable recognition of the user.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to an item-identifying cart that may be utilized by a user in a materials handling facility to automatically identify items that the user places in their cart, and update a virtual shopping cart to include items taken by the user. The mobile cart may include four capture assemblies that are disposed proximate to each of the four corners of a basket of the cart, and oriented such that their respective optical axes are directed towards an interior of a perimeter of the top of the basket, and above the top of the basket. The capture assemblies may include proximity sensors that are used to detect movement above the top of the basket, LEDs that illuminate items, and cameras that generate image data representing the items as they are placed in, or removed from, the cart.

Abstract: An ink that is detectable using infrared (IR) light may be used to apply machine readable codes, such as a barcode. The indicia, once applied, may be either invisible or difficult to detect with visible light, such as with the human eye. The ink may include one or more materials such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), particles of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), metals, and so forth. These materials may be used to enhance one or more of the reflectivity to IR light or the fluorescence of the ink under IR light. The fluorescent ink may be deposited in a single pass, or as part of a two-pass process in which a reflective substrate, such as a resin with encapsulated TiO2, is applied and then the fluorescent ink is deposited atop the substrate. The markings are machine readable even when overprinting markings that are readable under visible light.
