摘要: High temperature corrosion and erosion resistant electrodes particularly useful for magnetohydrodynamic generators which electrodes utilize chemical ionization of combustion reactants to diffuse the current flow into the electrode. A combustible fuel, oxidant and electrically conductive material flow through porous, graded electrode components toward the plasma. Catalyzed combustion occurs near the face of the electrode exposed to the plasma which diffuses current transfer in the boundary layer and into the electrode. The reactants and combustion products thus combine simultaneously to cool the inner portions of the electrode, heat the outer portions, protect the exposed electrode surface from erosion, and alleviate the physical or chemical bonding of the by-products of coal combustion to the electrode surface which otherwise results in chemical degradation of the electrode.

摘要: This invention discloses a packaging apparatus and method for large size products such as subprimals of meat. The products to be packaged are characterized as often having irregular surfaces and voids which make sealing of the film without wrinkles very difficult, particularly after bringing to a condition of reduced pressure. There is shown apparatus for forming a drape of film from two rolls of film and into this drape of film is advanced the product to be packaged. This drape is formed into a tubular film around the product and with this tube open at both ends. Into these open ends of the tube are moved spreader probes or bars which operate as pairs and are moved away from one another by a pneumatic cylinder which is actuated by appropriate apparatus so that the spreader probes as they move apart cause the film in these ends to be brought to a narrow opening and under a slight stretch. This elongated opening is substantially equally spaced from a theoretical center line of the tubular film. With the probes moved to a condition for stretching the film, the encased product and film are brought in way of a film heater and then are moved to a vacuum chamber whereat the spreader probes are withdrawn from the ends of the package. While and when in this chamber the interior and product are brought to a condition of reduced pressure. While still in the chamber and under the influence of reduced pressure, the elongated ends of the tubular film are heated and sealed so that these ends of film are substantially free of wrinkles. After sealing and with the ends still clamped, the chamber is opened to the atmosphere to allow the film ends to tightly enclose the product. The package is then removed from the vacuum chamber. Large products when packaged by skin packaging apparatus tend to have the film overstretched. This occurs when the product is used to shape and mold a heated film. With the product pushed into the draped film and a tube formed by closing and sealing the rear of the drape, overstretching of the film is eliminated or minimized to tolerable levels so that the resulting package is absent weak portions of film.

摘要: A catalytic combustor unit for a stationary combustion turbine includes a substrate composed of a plurality of intersecting walls defining a series of generally parallel passages aligned in rows and columns, open at their opposite ends and exposed to a heated flow of fuel and air mixture therethrough. The walls have sections which border and define the respective passages. Each wall section is in common with two adjacent passages and has a pair of oppositely-facing surface regions, one of which is exposed to one of the two adjacent passages and the other exposed to the other of the two adjacent passages. A catalyst coating is applied on selected ones of the wall surface regions exposed to certain ones of the passages, whereas selected others of the wall surfaces exposed to certain others of the passages are free of the catalyst coating. The substrate is thus provided with an arrangement of catalyzed passages in which the mixture is catalytically reacted and non-catalyzed passages in which the mixture is substantially not reacted but instead provides passive cooling of the substrate.

摘要: An apparatus and method for retarding the formation of a slag ring on the inner wall of a rotary lime kiln where coal combustion gases are used to provide heat in the calcining chamber of a rotary lime kiln. The inner wall of the kiln, at a predetermined location where a slag ring would tend to form, is cooled so as to cool the dispersed slag prior to contact with the inner wall of the calcining chamber sufficiently to prevent adherence of the slag to the inner wall. Cooling chambers or a cooling channel may be provided in the refractory lining forming the inner wall, or transpiration devices may be provided to inject coolant into the calcining chamber, at the predetermined location, to cool the slag and prevent adherence thereof to the inner wall.

摘要: A multi-annular swirl burner includes a plurality of overlapping tubular wall members which form a rich combustion zone and a lean combustion zone with a throat section therebetween. Annular passages are located between adjacent wall members, and vanes located therein input a tangential velocity to entering air. The tangential velocity of the swirling flows increases with increasing radius to produce centrifugal separating force on particulates moving from the rich combustion zone to the throat section. A collection system scavenges particulates from the throat section for disposal.

摘要: The invention relates to a method for providing a sterile inert atmosphere in an aseptic packaging machine wherein an inert gas is passed through a microbiological filter and then sparged through a bath of hot sterilizing liquid into the interior of the machine. A portion of the sterile inert gas is withdrawn from the machine interior by means of a suitable pump or blower, and separated into three parts; the first part being passed through a heater and then over the flange areas of containers passing through the machine to dry same prior to heat sealing operations, the second part being directed to the machine filler means to provide a back-up microbiological barrier for the filler, and the third part being passed through jets aligned on either side of a web of cover material as said cover material emerges from a sterilizing bath, said jets being arranged to blow off liquid sterilant adhering thereto.
