This invention relates to a method for rapidly determining weight and volume percent true boiling point curves for crude oils and fractions thereof. The method involves at least a partial separation of the crude oil or fraction into constituent chemical components, obtaining mass spectra of the chemical components, correlating retention time windows with boiling points for standard hydrocarbon mixtures, and converting the total ion current obtained from the mass spectra for selected components to weight and volume percent true boiling points by comparison with data obtained from a standard crude oil or fraction thereof.

The invention relates to a method for determining total reactive sulfur in a crude oil or fraction thereof using a mass spectrometer or gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer. Selecting fragment ions characteristic of reactive sulfur species enables the quantitative determination of total reactive sulfur species. The use of a low resolution mass spectrometer allows the rapid determination of total reactive sulfur in field or remote locations where more sophisticated instruments are not available.

Crude algae oils produced by practical extraction techniques comprise a wide range of molecular species that can be characterized by advanced analytical techniques. The algae oils comprise a complex mixture of a large number of molecules having varying sizes and therefore varying boiling points, and comprise high nitrogen, oxygen, and fatty acid content, but low sulfur, saturated hydrocarbons, and triglyceride content. Hydrogen/carbon molar ratios are typically greater than 1.6. The wide range of molecular species in the crude algae oils, while unusual compared to conventional refinery feed stocks and vegetable oils, may be upgraded into fuels by conventional refining approaches such as hydrotreating and thermal treatment. Unusual behavior of the algae oils in thermal processing and/or hydrotreatment may provide a high quality product slate, with the flexibility to adjust the product slate due to enhanced cracking behavior exhibited by these algae oils.
