摘要:
A hollow electrode assembly of industrial carbon comprises coaxially sequential electrode members with a central throughbore lined by an inner tube of carbon in each member. Each two sequential electrode members are rigidly joined with each other by a nipple, preferably of double-conical shape, which enters into respective socket recesses in the adjacent electrode members. The inner tubes of the electrode members are rigidly and gastightly connected with each other. Preferably, the connecting nipple is also lined with an inner tube which enters into a close telescoping seating relation with the adjacent ends of the respective electrode members.

A single chamber kiln for firing ceramic bodies, such as molded carbon bodies and the like, with combustion gas, includes a kiln having side walls and defining a chamber for receiving the ceramic bodies. Hydrocarbon fuel burners are arranged in the walls in a first plane for supplying the combustion gas to the chamber and gas outlets are disposed in the walls and directed into the chamber. Substantially vertical passages join the outlets and blowers are arranged in the walls at a second plane and communicate with these passages for moving combustion gas therethrough to circulate the same through the chamber.

Heat exchanger with nests of tubes having tube plates consisting of graphite. The tubes are cemented into recesses or holes of the tube plates. The depth of the recess is greater, preferably at least twice as great, as the height of the cement layer. The remaining ring gap is filled with substances in powder form or with such substances which do not bond with the cement mass.

THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A CARBON OR GRAPHITE FORMED BODY, AND MORE PARTICULARLY AN ARC ELECTRODE HAVING A PROTECTIVE LAYER WHICH ARRESTS OXIDATION, AND WHICH INCLUDES A PRIMARY LAYER, APPLIED UPON A CARBON OR GRAPHIC FORMED BODY, AND A METALLIC COVER LAYER COMPRISED ESSENTIALLY OF ALUMINUM OVER THE PRIMARY LAYER. THE PRIMARY LAYER IS COMPRISED OF 90 TO 100%, PREFERABLY 95 TO 98.9%, OF SILCON AND 0 TO 10%, PREFERABLY 1.1 TO 5.0%, OF SODIUM, MAGNESIUM, CALCIUM, BORON, ALUMINUM, TITANIUM, ZIRCONIUM, MANGANESE, IRON, CARBON, NITROGEN PHOSPHORUS AND OXYGEN, SEPARATELY OR IN COMBINATION. THE COVER LAYER IS COMPRISED OF 85 TO 100%, PREFERABLY 93 TO 99.5%, ALUMINUM AND 0 TO 15%, PREFERABLY 0.5 TO 7%, SODIUM, MAGNESIUM, BORON, SILICON, PHOSPHORUS, OXYGEN, COPPER, ZINC, LEAD, TITANIUM, ZIRCONIUM, CHROMIUM, MANGANESE, IRON, COBALT AND NICKEL, SEPARATELY OR IN COMBINATION.

Carbon fibers are produced by treating synthetic polymeric fibers with a solution of a condensation agent at a temperature of 180* to 230*C to effect cross-linking and/or cyclization within the polymeric fibers and thereafter heating the treated fibers to a temperature between 200*-300*C in an atmosphere containing an oxidizing gas and, subsequently, in an inert or reducing atmosphere, to a temperature of at least about 1,000*C. Titanium tetrachloride, lead tetrachloride, tin tetrachloride, and tin tetrabromide are used as condensation agents, preferably in the form of complexes in a solvent such as high-boiling ethers and esters. Dimethylformamide is used as a complex former. onitroanisole, d-n-butylterephthalate, and iso-octadecylbenzoate are used as both solvent and complex former.
