[Class 120 (iii)] This invention relates to means for automatically feeding fresh winding bobbins to automatic winding machines with automatic bobbin change in which the empty bobbins &c. are fed to the machine by an endless conveyer arrangement and is characterized in that the empty bobbins, delivered by continuously moving chains 74, 75, each cop being housed in a vertical cup 69 with a movable cover 77, are released therefrom by a pawl 52 which contacts and swings the cup-covers 77 and allows cops to fall into a hopper 14 down which they slide to a spring-urged feeding cup 20 close to the winding position. The cup 20 is provided on an oscillatable lever 21, actuated from a cam shaft 25, which moves the empty cop, after a full one has been doffed, to a position between a driving head 5 and a holding cup 11. In its passage down the hopper 14, each cop depresses a counterpoised flap 62 to lift a hooked rod 44 to release a plate 50 which pivots forwardly and moves the pawl 52 from the path of the cups 69 to ensure no further delivery of empty cops until the plate 50 and pawl 52 are reset by the rotation of shaft 25 operating through the bell crank 42 and the hooked rod 44 to bring the pawl 52 into the paths of travel of the cups 69. To prevent winding of initial lengths of yarn on a pirn or a yarn spooling core, which initial lengths may be offsize with respect to specifications, an auxiliary thread starting element is located coaxially with the yarn spool core, and an auxiliary thread guiding element controllable by lengths or quality of the thread is located in alignment with the auxiliary thread starting element, to guide the thread first on the starting element and then release the thread to transfer, automatically, to the traverse mechanism to wind the thread on the spooling core. The additional thread starting element and the guide are located at an end of the yarn spool core and the lateral tension of the thread, upon release of the thread from the auxiliary guide, will automatically transfer the thread to the traverse mechanism.

Thread is passed over a guide pin; a knife blade is spaced accurately by a predetermined distance from the guide pin, the distance determining the maximum size and gauge of the thread. To locate the distance, and provide for accurate placement of the knife blade, the blade is made movable in a path back and forth by a camming member which has a large distance of movement with respect to the movement of the knife blade, so that widely spaced markings can be used to easily identify the accurate position of the knife blade with respect to the pin.
