Upon the user making a hesitant verbal gesture that reaches a threshold duration, a transition is made from the current prompting layer to a more detailed prompting layer. Upon the user interrupting the prompt with a valid input, a transition is made from the current prompting layer to a less detailed prompting layer.

    摘要: The wireless computer input system uses a pen-type input device and a receiver. The pen-type input device includes an LED, at least one switch, a rechargeable battery, and a control circuit. The control circuit provides signals to the LED upon activation of the switch, and provides for power management functions allowing the pen to conserve power during idle periods. The receiver includes one or more light-detecting elements connected to position computation circuitry. The light-detecting element or elements are either a two-dimensional PSD, two one-dimensional PSDs or a four division photodiode. Optional lenses, optical filters, and apertured plates are positioned before the light-detecting element(s), improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the system. The computation circuitry receives the signals from the light-detecting element(s), digitizes them, and computes the coordinates of the pen which are output to a host computer. A recharging circuit, connected to the computation circuit, allows the pen to be recharged within the receiver or connected by a cord when the battery lacks sufficient power.

    摘要: A computer joystick capable of detecting the position of a control stick in the X and Y directions, as well as the rotational (R) position of the control stick to allow three positional measurements to be made. The joystick uses an optical position detection circuit with a pair of light sources mounted either on the control stick or a printed circuit board mounted beneath the control stick. A photodetector assemble is mounted opposite the pair of light sources to detect light from the light sources. The distribution of the light intensity is indicative of the position of the control stick in the X, Y, and R directions. A single coil spring is used to return the control stick to a resting position when released by the user. The single spring provides an even return force that is dependent on displacement from the resting position. The bottom portion of the control stick moves in a three dimensional arcuate path as the control stick is manipulated by the user. To simplify operation of the optical position detection circuit, the joystick uses a mechanical three dimensional to two dimensional mechanical converter assembly to convert the arcuate movement of the control stick to two dimensional movement of the light sources.

    摘要: An apparatus and a method for controlling a feedback force applied by a joystick to a user gripping the control handle of the joystick. In the preferred embodiment, a light path between an infrared light source and a light sensor is interrupted by a user gripping the handle of a joystick. The output signal from the light sensor is employed by a processor to control the feedback force. When based upon the output signal, the processor determines that the user has just gripped the control handle, the processor enables the feedback force to increase slowly, over a sufficiently long time to enable the user to firmly grip the control handle before the feedback force becomes very strong. The processor immediately disables generation of the feedback force as soon as the user releases the control handle. The processor periodically energizes and then de-energizes the light source, determines an average value of the output signal when the light source is both energized and de-energized, and based upon a comparison of these average values, determines if the user's hand gripping the control handle has interrupted the light path between the source and light sensor. Additionally, the processor checks for a failure of the light source, and if detected, halts the generation of the feedback force.
