The present invention relates to a device for a beverage brewing machine for the heating and emulsification of liquids, in particular for the preparation of the coffee with milk beverage "Cappuccino". The device comprises a pipe and a nozzle succeeding in the lower section to the bore, from the orifice of which nozzle hot steam exits during operation. The nozzle is encompassed by the pipe such that an annular chamber is formed around the nozzle, which chamber is open in the direction of flow. The open end of the annular chamber extends beyond the orifice of the nozzle. Apertures are formed at the pipe at the level of the orifice of the nozzle, through which the air, which is necessary for the emulsification, can enter the annular chamber. Further, rib structure is provided at the pipe which permits a user to keep a defined distance between the orifice of the nozzle and the liquid's surface by visual check. Handling is considerably simplified during the emulsification of milk, because the visual check means permits a user to easily maintain the distance of the orifice of the nozzle from the surface of the milk. Good froth results are obtained.

According to the invention, a distance sensor (14, 15) serves to determine a distance of the distance sensor (14, 15) from the storage phosphor plate (1) lying on the support (10), and the controller (12) is designed such that it processes the X-ray information read out from the storage phosphor layer (2) dependently upon the distance determined by means of the distance sensor (14, 15). An unlevelness determined by means of the distance sensor (14, 15) is taken into account by the controller (12) when processing the X-ray information read out. In this way, a good image quality of an X-ray image read out is guaranteed in a technically simple way.

Sensing the level of a liquid in a vessel by the pulse transit time technique is done by means of an ultrasonic transducer mounted above the highest-permissible level in the vessel which emits ultrasonic transmission pulses to the surface of the liquid and receives the ultrasonic echo pulses reflected from the liquid surface. The level in the vessel is established from the transit time of the ultrasonic pulses. To detect an overfill when the ultrasonic transducer is immersed in the liquid the decaying output signal of the ultrasonic transducer generated by the ringing of the ultrasonic transducer following the end of the each ultrasonic transmission pulse is analyzed. In this arrangement the fact is exploited that due to the better coupling of the ultrasonic transducer to the liquid than to air the ringing duration is shorter when the ultrasonic transducer is covered by the liquid.
