Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods that allow a mobile device to fully access unified communication services of a carrier. In a particular embodiment, a control system receives a call for a unified communications service and determines whether the mobile device is associated with the unified communication service. If the mobile device is not associated with the unified communication service, then the call is connected to a unified communication system to provide access to a first portion of the unified communication service. If the call is associated with the services, then the call is assigned a virtual number and connected to an intermediate communication system, which determines at least a second portion of the unified communication service associated with the virtual number. The call is then connected to the unified communication system to provide access to the first and second portions of the unified communication service.

A radio access system receives packets from a local source of streaming media content via a local connection and from remote packet sources via a remote network. The radio access system communicates with a subscriber station via an air interface that includes an uplink and a downlink. A packet classifier in the radio access system maps packets having the subscriber station's IP address as destination address to the subscriber station's downlink. The subscriber station communicates with a content controller via the remote network to request selected streaming media content. The content controller instructs the radio access system to convey the selected streaming media content from the local source to the subscriber station. In response, the packet classifier maps the packets containing the selected streaming media content to a downlink (either the original downlink or a new one) for transmission to the subscriber station.

The load of a coverage area in a wireless wide area network can be used as a basis to determine which vocoder to use in establishing a call between a wireless device in that coverage area and a wireless device in a different coverage area. If the load of the coverage area is above a threshold, then a higher-compression vocoder may be used during the call for communications between the wireless device and an access point serving the wireless device in that coverage area. However, if the load of the coverage area is below the threshold, then a lower-compression vocoder may be used during the call for communications between the wireless device and the access point.

A gateway assignment manager is also included in the system. This manager is configured to assign the client device to the gateway. A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). The multi-mode mobile station may become engaged in one or more communication sessions via a first wireless network. Session information regarding these one or more communication sessions is stored in a storage system. In response to a handoff request, a control system evaluates the session information to determine which of the communication sessions, if any, can be continued via the second wireless network, in accordance with a policy. The user may be notified of any sessions that can not be continued via the second wireless network and/or continued at a reduced level of performance. If the user opts to complete the handoff, continuable sessions are continued via the second wireless network and non-continuable sessions are dropped.

A method for establishing multicast PoC communication is disclosed. To establish multicast PoC communication, a multicast-join process will be coupled with a PoC session setup process, and the PoC server will function as a multicast content server, to multicast PoC communications to the PoC session participants. For example, when a party initiates a PoC session, the PoC server may acquire a multicast flow-ID from a multicast session manager, and the PoC server may convey that multicast flow-ID to each participant within the PoC session setup signaling. Upon receipt of the multicast flow-ID, each participant may then engage in signaling with the multicast session manager, to join the associated multicast group. And the multicast session manager may direct the PoC server to begin multicasting the associated flow to the group members, which the PoC server will do once it begins receiving PoC bearer data from one of the PoC session participants.

Thereafter, an address version for each destination host address is identified. A method and system for multicasting messages to wireless terminals. A multicast radio-packet link is established between a packet gateway and a base station system respectively for each cell sector served by the packet gateway. Each multicast link has an active state when any wireless terminals in the corresponding cell sector are in a multicast state prepared to receive multicast messages, and an inactive state when no wireless terminals in the corresponding cell sector are in the multicast state. When the packet gateway receives a multicast message, it sends the message over each active multicast link but not over any inactive multicast link. Thus, a single copy of the multicast message can conveniently be sent just to each of the cell sectors that is currently serving at least one wireless terminal that is in a multicast state.

A method and system for facilitating end-to-end quality of service in a 3G packet data network. A packet-data session is set up between a mobile station and a packet-data network, via a base station and a packet data serving node (PDSN). The base station manages quality of service for the session as it passes over the air interface, and the PDSN manages quality of service for the session as it passes into the packet-data network. The PDSN translates between quality of service on the packet-data network and quality of service on the air interface, and the PDSN and base station communicate the quality of service information, so that both the base station and PDSN can work to set up consistent levels of quality of service on their respective links.
