摘要: Methods for applying heat to a region proximate a blood vessel are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method can include generating an imaging ultrasound beam adapted to image a blood vessel target and receiving a reflection of the imaging ultrasound beam. The method can also include producing an output signal in response to the reflection of the imaging ultrasonic beam and processing the output signal to identify a location of a treatment zone proximate an outer wall of the blood vessel. Therapeutic energy can be applied to the treatment zone. In some embodiments, the therapeutic ultrasound energy beam can be moved to over-scan the treatment zone. Other methods are also disclosed.

摘要: An ultrasonic applicator unit (2) is used diagnostically to locate a puncture wound (316) in an artery and then therapeutically to seal the puncture wound with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). A control unit (6) coupled to the applicator unit includes a processor (74) that automates the procedure, controlling various parameters of the diagnostic and therapeutic modes, including the intensity and duration of the ultrasonic energy emitted by the applicator unit. A protective, sterile acoustic shell (4), which is intended to be used with a single patient and then discarded, is slipped over the applicator unit to protect against direct contact between the applicator unit and the patient and to maintain a sterile field at the site of the puncture. The apparatus and method are particularly applicable to sealing a puncture made when inserting a catheter into an artery or other vessel. Several different procedures are described for locating the puncture wound, including imaging the vessel in which the puncture is disposed and use of a locator rod to determine the disposition of the puncture along the longitudinal axis of the artery.

摘要: A technique for finding paired isotope groups of peptides, metabolic materials, or other materials is executed without having to identify features. Any suitable isotopic labeling methods, such as SILAC or ICAT, can be used. The technique can identify isotope pairs by pairing heavy and light labeled peptides based on mono-isotopes. The technique searches for isotope groups that have retention time and mass/charge within given tolerances, adjustable by users. Multiple label sites are supported as well as reverse-labeling to inhibit or reduce biases. Multiple replicates can be merged into a composite image.

摘要: An image processing system extracts parts or characteristics of interest from prepared biological samples One suitable use of the image processing system is to find biomarkers. But many other suitable uses are possible. Some components of the system include image preprocessing (data interpolation, retention time alignment, image noise filtering, background estimation, and formation of a composite image); image feature extraction (peaks, isotope groups, and charge groups); and computation of feature characteristics and expression statistics, differential expression, and non-differential expression. Outputs of the system include a candidate list of parts or characteristic of interest for aiding further discovery.

摘要: Ultrasound applicators able to both image a treatment site and administer ultrasound therapy include an array of transducer elements that can be focused. In several embodiments, an electronically phased array is used for controlling the focal point of an ultrasound beam. The ultrasound beam produced thereby can also be electronically steered. To reduce the quality factor or Q of the array when the array is used for imaging, an electronic switch is selectively closed, placing a resistance in parallel with each of the array elements. A flexible array is employed in several embodiments and is selectively bent or flexed to vary its radius of curvature and thus control the focal point and/or a direction of focus of the array. In another embodiment, each of the transducer elements comprising the array are individually mechanically pivotable to steer the ultrasonic beam produced by the transducer elements.

摘要: An image registration based method and a corresponding apparatus are provided for creating composite, panoramic images, in which consecutive ultrasonic image frames are correlated in order to derive transducer motion information. The individual images can be divided into several smaller sub-image regions and a fast and robust image motion detection algorithm is used to measure the sub-image motion and then to determine an initial estimation of the local motion vectors. The initial estimation is combined with two measurement parameters by use of a fuzzy logic technique to derive a final estimation of the local motion vectors. The final local motion vectors are then used to estimate global image motion. Compound images are then diplayed based on the derived global image motion. The speed of motion of the transducer is also estimated and a "speedometer" is displayed to help the user move the transducer within efficient speed ranges. Image frames may also be selectively "zoomed" in on and displayed in an undistorted manner. Distance scales are generated for both the normally curved panoramic image and also the undistorted frame images. A frame guide is also displayed to help the user guide the transducer to area of greatest interest. Color-coded velocity or power information may also be superimposed on the panoramic image, and spectral Doppler data may also be displayed at selected points in the panoramic image. A memory map is preferably also displayed to indicate to the user how much image memory is remaining during a scan.
