摘要: A unitary polymer electrolyte/polymer-based cathode film component for use in a solid state electrochemical cell is manufactured by solution casting onto one of the electrolyte or cathode, a solution of the other of the electrolyte or cathode. The solution is prepared at elevated temperature (e.g. 40.degree.-50.degree. C.) and cooled to a lower temperature, e.g. ambient, before carrying out the casting. The solvent (e.g. methanol) is such that the polymer (e.g. poly (ethylene oxide)) is only sparingly soluble therein at the lower temperature and relatively readily soluble therein at the elevated temperature. Also, immediate precipitation of the polymer does not occur on cooling the solution from the elevated temperature to the lower temperature. In this way, dissolution of said one of the electrolyte or cathode is avoided.

摘要: A solid polymer electrolyte for a solid state electrochemical cell comprises a complex of a solid polymer such as poly(ethene oxide) and an alkali metal salt such as LiCLO.sub.4, which polymer is capable of forming donor: acceptor type bonds with alkali metal ions and is capable of conducting alkali metal ions, the complex being associated with a mixture of more than one 1,3-dioxolane-2-ones, for example ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, such that the electrolyte possesses satisfactory ambient temperature ionic conductivity (e.g. 10.sup.-3 to 10.sup.-4 ohm.sup.-1 cm.sup.-1) and a cell including the electrolyte substantially maintains its discharge capacity at ambient temperature after repeated charge/discharge cycling.

摘要: A chopped fiberglass containing laminate for fabricating sound absorbing moldable structures, such an automotive headliner is provided. The laminate includes a nonwoven fine denier thermoplastic fiber scrim, a thermoplastic barrier film on one surface and a layer of chopped fiberglass and powder adhesive on the exposed surface of the barrier film. The laminate is combined with a foam core, fiberglass layer and decorative fabric on the fiberglass layer to provide a composite having elongation exceeding 30% in both machine and transverse directions for forming the headliner. An apparatus and method for forming the laminate are so disclosed.

摘要: A heating element comprises a body provided by fibrous tubes of an electrically conductive material, a voidage between the tubes providing a path for a fluid to be heated. The material may be silicon, silicon carbide, or silicon rich-silicon nitride. The heating element is manufactured by coating a fibrous carbon precursor with the material, and heating the coated precursor in an oxidizing environment so as to remove the carbon precursor by oxidation. The heating element has one application for a heat transfer system for controlling the temperature of a hot working device. The system comprises a fluid circuit including the hot working device, the heating element through which the fluid is driven by a pump, and a temperature controller for sensing the temperature of the device and controlling the temperature of the heating element as a function of the device temperature.

摘要: A solid state electrochemical cell comprises an anode having lithium as its active material, a polymeric electrolyte, and a cathode comprising a composite of an insertion electrode material or similarly active material and a polymeric material. One of the electrolyte and the cathode possesses an ionically conducting phase at ambient temperature and the other of the electrolyte and the cathode lacks such a phase. Ionic conductivity can be induced in said other of the electrolyte and cathode at elevated temperature thereby to render the cell operable and give rise to improvements in comparison with cells where such phases are present ab initio.
