The present invention relates to spherical solid catalyst components for the polymerization of olefins, comprising a titanium compound, supported on a magnesium halide, containing more than one Ti-halogen link and optionally containing groups different from halogen in an amount lower than 0.5 mole per mole of Ti. Spherical solid compounds of the invention are characterized by having a surface area, measured by the BET method, of lower than 70 m2/g, a total porosity, measured by the mercurium method, higher than 0.5 cm3/g and a pore radius such that at least 50% have values higher than 800 Å.

There are disclosed new catalyst-forming components and catalysts prepared therefrom which, used in the polymerization of olefins, result in high yields of polyolefins having a narrow molecular weight distribution and which do not require special purifying after-treatments for the removal of catalyst residues. More particularly, the new catalyst components and catalysts prepared from them are useful in the polymerization of ethylene or alpha-olefins CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR, in which R is an alkyl or aryl radical of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or mixtures of ethylene with said alpha-olefins.

Catalytic components for copolymerizing ethylene with alpha-olefins, or alpha-olefins with one another, and possibly with a diene as a termonomer, suitable for producing saturated and unsaturated elastomeric copolymers are disclosed. The catalytic components are compounds obtained by the reaction of:(1) a magnesium compound having the formula:R'.sub.y MgX.sub.n (OR).sub.2-n (wherein R, R'=alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl; X=Cl, Br; n is from 0 to 1.8, y is from 0 to 1, and n+y=2), or(2) a Mg-alcohol adduct;with a titanium compound having the formula:Ti(OR).sub.Z X.sub.4-Z'wherein X and R are as defined above and Z is from 0 to 1, the compounds being charcterized by a Mg/Ti ratio of from 0.5 to 50 and an OR/Ti ratio of from 0.7 to 10. The copolymers produced using these catalytic components are endowed with improved tension-set characteristics in the vulcanized state.

Disclosed are catalysts for the polymerization of ethylene and of mixtures thereof with olefins, comprising the product obtained by reacting the following components:(a) an Al-alkyl compound;(b) an electron-donor compound containing at least a nitrogen atom, said compound being reactive towards MgCl.sub.2, but not towards Al-triethyl; and(c) the reaction product between a titanium compound containing at least a titanium-halogen bond and an anhydrous magnesium halide.The obtained (co)polymers have a very narrow molecular weight distribution which renders them particularly suitable for some applications, such as injection molding.
