There are disclosed new catalyst-forming components and catalysts prepared therefrom which, used in the polymerization of olefins, result in high yields of polyolefins having a narrow molecular weight distribution and which do not require special purifying after-treatments for the removal of catalyst residues. More particularly, the new catalyst components and catalysts prepared from them are useful in the polymerization of ethylene or alpha-olefins CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR, in which R is an alkyl or aryl radical of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or mixtures of ethylene with said alpha-olefins.

Catalytic components for copolymerizing ethylene with alpha-olefins, or alpha-olefins with one another, and possibly with a diene as a termonomer, suitable for producing saturated and unsaturated elastomeric copolymers are disclosed. The catalytic components are compounds obtained by the reaction of:(1) a magnesium compound having the formula:R'.sub.y MgX.sub.n (OR).sub.2-n (wherein R, R'=alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl; X=Cl, Br; n is from 0 to 1.8, y is from 0 to 1, and n+y=2), or(2) a Mg-alcohol adduct;with a titanium compound having the formula:Ti(OR).sub.Z X.sub.4-Z'wherein X and R are as defined above and Z is from 0 to 1, the compounds being charcterized by a Mg/Ti ratio of from 0.5 to 50 and an OR/Ti ratio of from 0.7 to 10. The copolymers produced using these catalytic components are endowed with improved tension-set characteristics in the vulcanized state.

Crystalline copolymers of ethylene and alpha-olefins CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR in which R is an alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, containing 0.5 to 3% by moles of polymerized alpha-olefin and having a density lower than 0.945 g/cc are obtained by polymerizing, in the gas phase, mixtures of ethylene and the alpha-olefins in contact with catalysts prepared from (1) Ti compounds supported on Mg halides and (2) organometallic compounds, which are active in the polymerization of ethylene but exhibit little, if any, activity in the homo- or copolymerization of the alpha-olefins.

Catalysts for the preparation of copolymers of ethylene and/or alpha-olefins and optionally dienes, are obtained by reacting an Al-alkyl with a solid catalytic component comprising:(A) a magnesium compound containing at least an Mg-halogen bond;(B) a halogenated compound of at least partly trivalent Ti or V, containing at least a Ti-OR or V-OR bond, wherein the Mg/Ti(V), halogen/Ti(V), halogen/Mg and OR/Ti(V) atomic ratios are within determined ranges; and(C) an electron-donor compound.Elastomeric copolymers endowed with improved tension set values are obtained with said catalysts.
