A fluorescent lamp including a phosphor layer including (Y1-x-yGdx)AlO3:EU3+y, wherein 0.4≦x≦0.7 and 0≦y≦0.1, and at least one of each of a green and blue emitting phosphor. The resulting lamp will exhibit a white light having a color rendering index of preferably 90 or higher with a correlated color temperature of from 2500 to 10000 Kelvin. The use of (Y1-x-yGdx)AlO3:Eu3+y in phosphor blends of lamps results in high CRI light sources with increased stability and acceptable lumen maintenance over, the course of the lamp life.

In one embodiment, a phosphor comprises lanthanum and gadolinium phosphate and/or borate co-activated with cerium and terbium. A phosphor of the present invention has low emission of UV radiation having wavelengths longer than about 250 nm, thus efficiently uses exciting UV having shorter wavelengths. The phosphor is used in light source that comprises a UV radiation source to convert efficiently UV radiation to visible light.

Scintillator materials based on certain types of halide-lanthanide matrix materials are described. In one embodiment, the matrix material contains a mixture of lanthanide halides, i.e., a solid solution of at least two of the halides, such as lanthanum chloride and lanthanum bromide. In another embodiment, the matrix material is based on lanthanum iodide alone, which must be substantially free of lanthanum oxyiodide. The scintillator materials, which can be in monocrystalline or polycrystalline form, also include an activator for the matrix material, e.g., cerium. To further improve the stopping power and the scintillating efficiency of these halide scintillators, the addition of bismuth is disclosed. Radiation detectors that use the scintillators are also described, as are related methods for detecting high-energy radiation.

There is provided a blue-green illumination system, including a semiconductor light emitter, and a luminescent material, wherein the system has an emission with CIE color coordinates located within an area of a of a pentagon on a CIE chromaticity diagram, whose corners have the following CIE color coordinates: i) x=0.0137 and y=0.4831; ii) x=0.2240 and y=0.3890; iii) x=0.2800 and y=0.4500; iv) x=0.2879 and y=0.5196; and v) x=0.0108 and y=0.7220. The luminescent material includes two or more phosphors. The illumination system may be used as the green light of a traffic light or an automotive display.
