    摘要: A strip of nails is formed of spaced and parallel nails joined together by two pairs of spaced, flexible tapes and a thin layer of adhesive. Each pair of tapes is bonded together in face-toface relation between the nail shanks and bonded or adhered to the nails. Each pair of tapes is provided with a narrow outwardly bowed portion extending along the length of the tapes which fills with adhesive to prevent the adhesive from being squeezed out from between the tapes, to provide an increased mass of adhesive for bonding to the nail shanks, and to provide a small amount of resistance to compression without affecting the ability of the strip to be rolled or folded. The method of making the strip includes the steps of moving the spaced nails along a path, applying a thin layer of adhesive to the inner surfaces of the tapes, deforming the tapes slightly to provide a small longitudinally extending pocket, and forcing the tapes against the nail shanks and each other to form a flexible strip with a longitudinal adhesive-filled cavity or rib between the shanks. The apparatus for carrying out the method uses a pair of tape applying rollers with spaced axially extending shank receiving openings and a peripherally extending recess into which the tape is drawn by vacuum to form the rib.

    摘要: A self-locking fastener in which a portion of less than 180* circumferential extent of the screw thread of the fastener is changed in pitch diameter to achieve an interference fit. If it is an external screw or male thread, it is increased in pitch diameter; but if it is an internal screw or female thread, it is decreased in pitch diameter. In both instances, the cross sectional width of the screw thread is increased at any given diameter, and the width of the crest of the screw thread is increased without change in the crest diameter of the screw thread. In addition, improved locking is obtained, particularly at relatively high temperatures, by constructing the portion as an insert of a metal having a coefficient of expansion which is substantially the same or higher than the material of the fastener.

    摘要: A strip of sheet material is embossed with ribs of the character of screw threads on both of its faces and then the strip is rolled to form a longitudinally split tubular insert for use to retain a screw member in a threaded bore of a workpiece. Selflocking action may be accomplished in various ways as follows: the insert may be non-circular for binding action on the walls of the bore; one of the two confronting ends of the tubular insert may be offset inwardly to resist relative rotation between the insert and the enclosed screw member; one of the confronting ends of the tubular insert may be offset outwardly to resist relative rotation between the insert member and the bore in which it is mounted; the tubular insert may be distorted slightly vertically for misalignment of the turns of either or both the internal and external screw threads at the confronting edges of the split insert; with the insert of normal configuration, one of the internal and external screw threads may be positioned for misalignment at the longitudinal split of the insert; with the turns of a screw thread of the insert misaligned at the confronting edges of the insert, at least a portion of the longitudinal split of the insert may be inclined relative to the axis of the insert in a direction for interference between the confronting edges when restoring the alignment tends to move the confronting edges relative to each other, the result being a self-locking action; and, with the turns of one of the screw threads misaligned at the longitudinal split of the insert the confronting edges of the insert along the longitudinal split may be shaped and dimensioned to interlock to oppose the relative longitudinal movement of the two edges that is required for alignment of the misaligned turns thereby to provide self-locking action when the insert is placed into service.

    摘要: A pneumatic fastener driving tool using a compressed air driven fastener driver includes a housing supplied with compressed air. A nosepiece on the housing forms a drive track for the driver to which fasteners are supplied below the driver. An opening through the nosepiece into the drive track is closed by a movable closure held in place by a pneumatic clamping assembly. This assembly includes a piston and cylinder supplied with compressed air from the housing for biasing a lever engaging the closure. A manually actuated release valve in the piston releases the bias to permit movement of the closure to clear jams. A fulcrum for the lever is also removable to permit opening of the closure to clear difficult jams.
