Abstract:
An electrophoretic medium comprises a continuous phase and a discontinuous phase. The discontinuous phase comprises a plurality of droplets, each of which comprises a fluid and at least one charged particle disposed within the fluid and capable of moving through the fluid upon application of an electric field to the electrophoretic medium. The continuous phase surrounds and encapsulates the discontinuous phase and comprising a polymeric binder and a salt, the salt having an anion containing at least one fluorine atom and having a water solubility of at least about 0.25 per cent by weight at 25° C.
Abstract:
A system identifies undesirable content in responses sent to a user, such as in e-mail or in downloadable files, from an Internet or intranet site. The system utilizes a redirection program that identifies content requests from a user to a target server. The redirection program redirects the request to a proxy server that sends the request to the target server. Upon receipt of the response from the target server, the proxy server scans the response, which includes any attachments, for undesirable content, such as junk e-mails, computer viruses, pornographic material, and/or other undesirable content. The proxy server then acts upon the response, and any undesirable content, in accordance with default or user-defined parameters, such as removal of the undesirable content. The proxy server may then send the response, as modified, or a notification message to the redirection program forwarding to the user.
Abstract:
An electro-optic display comprises first and second substrates, and an adhesive layer and a layer of electro-optic material disposed between these substrates, the adhesive layer comprising a mixture of a polymeric adhesive material and an additive selected from a salt, a polyelectrolyte, a polymer electrolyte, a solid electrolyte, a conductive metal powder, a ferrofluid, a non-reactive solvent, a conductive organic compound, and combinations thereof. The additive enables the volume resistivity of the adhesive layer to be controlled. Also, in an encapsulated electrophoretic medium comprising capsules in a polymeric binder, the volume resistivity of the binder can be controlled in a similar manner.

Abstract:
In an Internet or Intranet environment, a proxy server (or router or intelligent switch or firewall) which supports a number of clients (e.g. web browsers) has additional functionality which allows it to deliver a software module to a particular client depending on characteristics of that client. This downloaded module is then executed by the client which sets up a bidirectional communications link between the proxy server and the client. This bidirectional link allows for instance a status display at the client, by use of a window on the client platform, indicating the current status of proxy server activity such as virus scanning, content filtering, bandwidth usage, etc. In other applications the downloaded module allows provision of a organizational bulletin board, news channel, or provider of common software patches.

Abstract:
A system for detecting and eliminating viruses on a computer network includes a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) proxy server, for controlling the transfer of files and a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) proxy server for controlling the transfer of mail messages through the system. The FTP proxy server and SMTP proxy server run concurrently with the normal operation of the system and operate in a manner such that viruses transmitted to or from the network in files and messages are detected before transfer into or from the system. The FTP proxy server and SMTP proxy server scan all incoming and outgoing files and messages, respectively before transfer for viruses and then transfer the files and messages, only if they do not contain any viruses. A method for processing a file before transmission into or from the network includes the steps of: receiving the data transfer command and file name; transferring the file to a system node; performing virus detection on the file; determining whether the file contains any viruses; transferring the file from the system to a recipient node if the file does not contain a virus; and deleting the file if the file contains a virus.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for providing real-time tracking of virus information as reported from various computers on a distributed computer network. Each client computer on the distributed network contacts an anti-virus scanning site. The site provides a small program or applet that resides in temporary memory of the client computer. The client-user invokes the scan with supplied pattern updates for detecting recent viruses. When the scan has been completed, the user is prompted to supply a country of origin. The name of the virus, its frequency of occurrence, and the country are forwarded as a virus scan log to a virus tracking server, which receives the virus information and thereafter stores it in a database server, which is used to further calculate virus trace display information. A tracking user contacts the virus tracking server and receives map information, which traces the virus activity. The maps show, according to user preference, the names of the viruses encountered in each country, and their frequencies of occurrence.
