摘要:
A device sending electronic messages first verifies the intended recipient of the message by sending a message beacon (101) comprising data uniquely identifying the electronic message and the electronic address of the intended recipient of the message to a receiving device. The receiving device verifies that the intended recipient is serviced by the receiving device and then replies to the sending device returning the message beacon (102). The sending device thereafter sends the electronic message to the intended recipient (103). The receiving device may also reply to the sending device with a verification reply including data related to the intended recipient (108). Upon consideration of the data, the sending device may alter the electronic message prior to forwarding, forward the message or determine to withhold the message.

Certain of the present embodiments provide a mechanism to enable ports of initiator devices in a network to receive notifications of port state change that relate only to ports of target devices in the network. Certain others of the present embodiments provide a mechanism to enable ports of initiator devices to determine whether a notification of port state change pertains to a port of an initiator device or a target device.

A system and method of managing unsolicited email sent to an email system over a network. Email messages are received at an message at an inbound mail transfer agent. A determination is made as to whether the email message is suspected to be an unsolicited suspect message. One or more queries for additional information on one or more characteristics of the message is initiated. Determinations are made based on replies to the queries before issuing a message accepted for delivery indication to a sending server.

The invention provides for at least three processes for detecting the probability of abusive use of a message account for sending large amounts of unsolicited messages, such as spam, to other message accounts. For example, information provided at registration for a new message account can be processed to determine the likelihood of abusive use of that message account. Also, inbound messages can be processed to determine if the message account that sent the inbound message is abusing the use of that message account. Additionally, outbound messages can be processed to determine if the message account that is attempting to send an outbound message is abusing the use of that message account. Each of these three processes can operate separately or in any combination with each other to further improve the probability that abusive use of a message account will be detected promptly and accurately.

Systems and methods are provided for identifying unsolicited or unwanted electronic communications, such as spam. The disclosed embodiments also encompass systems and methods for selecting content items from a content item database. Consistent with certain embodiments, computer-implemented systems and methods may use a clustering based statistical content matching anti-spam algorithm to identify and filter spam. Such a anti-spam algorithm may be implemented to determine a degree of similarity between an incoming e-mail with a collection of one or more spam e-mails stored in a database. If the degree of similarity exceeds a predetermined threshold, the incoming e-mail may be classified as spam. Further, in accordance with other embodiments, systems and methods may be provided to determine a degree of similarity between a query or search string from a user and content items stored in a database. If the degree of similarity exceeds a predetermined threshold, the content item from the database may be identified as a content item that matches the query or search string provided by the user.

An e-mail filter may be associated with a schedule defining a recurrent active time period. As such, some e-mail filters may be active at specific times of day and on specific days of the week and inactive the rest of the time. Before applying any filters, the current time is determined and it is determined which filters are active. The determination of which filters are active is based on the current time being within the active time period.
