摘要:
Embodiments of the present invention concern methods of preventing malaria in a target population of humans comprising: uniformly administering a therapeutically effective amount of a live low dose malaria vaccine to each individual within the target population on each of two or three consecutive days. The methods include using Plasmodium infected mosquitoes to inject Plasmodium into individuals through mosquito bites.

The present invention is directed to a method of protecting an animal against against malaria caused by Plasmodium which undergoes more than one stage in its life cycle or undergoes more than one infectious cycle, the method comprising: a) administering to the animal a live vaccine containing sufficient Plasmodium sporozites that are low in pathogenicity and sensitive to one or more anti-malarial drugs to develop an immunological response in the animal; b) maintaining the animal free from anti-malarial drugs effective against Plasmodium for a period of time corresponding to about one life cycle or infectious cycle of the Plasmodium; and c) thereafter administering to the animal a anti-malarial drugs effective against Plasmodium for a period of time corresponding to at least one life cycle or infectious cycle of the Plasmodium.

The present invention is directed to a method of protecting an animal against a chronic disease, the disease being caused by an infectious organism which undergoes more than one stage in its life cycle or undergoes more than one infectious cycle. The method comprises: a) administering to the animal a live vaccine containing sufficient organisms to develop an immunological response in the animal; b) maintaining the animal free from chemotherapeutic agents effective against the infectious organism for a period of time corresponding to about one life or infectious cycle of the organism; and c) thereafter administering to the animal a chemotherapeutic agent effective against the infectious organism for a period of time corresponding to at least one life or infectious cycle of the infectious organism.

In one aspect, the present invention is directed to a method of protecting a poultry bird against coccidiosis. The method comprises: a) administering to the bird a live vaccine containing sufficient number of Eimeria sp. to develop an immunological response in the animal; b) maintaining the animal free from chemotherapeutic agents effective against the Eimeria sp. for a period of time corresponding to about one life cycle or infectious cycle of the Eimeria sp.; and c) thereafter administering to the animal a therapeutic amount of a narasin ionophore for a period of time corresponding to at least one life cycle or infectious cycle of the Eimeria sp.

The present invention provides for a drinking tray for use by small animals. The drinking tray has at least two fluid containment regions mounted on a common base, the fluid containment regions being separated one from another by elongate openings extending across the tray. In an aspect of the invention there is provided a drinking tray for use in a shipping container for transport of small animals, the shipping container being divided into sections by removable dividers. The drinking tray has a plurality of fluid containment regions mounted on a common base for providing stability. The tray is provided with openings for accepting the inserts which divide the shipping cartons into sections, the openings separating the fluid containment regions one from another such that each section of the shipping carton will be provided with a fluid containment region. Each section of the tray is provided with a fluid holding portion having a capacity to hold sufficient fluid to prevent the dehydration of the animals in the section of the shipping tray during transport.

This invention relates to a device for testing the efficacy of any disinfectant treatment, such as water disinfectants or equipment disinfectants. The device includes a culture of live unsporulated free-living protozoan parasites. If the disinfectant treatment successfully kills all or a substantial number of parasites, then the treatment is effective. One can determine whether the parasites have been killed or not by exposing them to sporulation conditions, and if they sporulate after exposure to the disinfectant treatment, then they were not killed by the disinfectant treatment.

The present invention is directed to a composition, kit and method for delivering a soft flowable gel to a flock of poultry in barns, but can also be used in hatcheries or free range farms, for treating poultry with a therapeutic agent. The soft flowable gel comprises water, a gelling agent, a therapeutic agent and between about 0.05% and 0.15% xanthan gum.

The present invention is directed to a method of treating poultry hatchlings in a hatchling tray. The method comprises of providing a soft gel form capable of being dispensed through a spray nozzle, providing a spray dispensing apparatus, the apparatus being capable of delivering a predetermined volume of the gel as a plurality of small beadlets through a plurality of nozzles, placing the hatchling tray containing the hatchlings beneath the nozzles of the dispensing apparatus, dispensing the predetermined volume of the soft gel containing the therapeutic agent as small beadlets into the hatchling tray and allowing the hatchlings to consume the beadlets. The pre sent invention is also directed to a dispensing apparatus for dispensing a therapeutic agent in a soft gel into a hatchling tray of poultry hatchlings.
