The designated area is associated with an operating rule that requires the vehicle to travel at least as fast as a lower speed limit. The location determination system monitors actual locations of the vehicle as the vehicle travels along the route. The speed sensor obtains speed data representative of an actual velocity of the vehicle. The controller restricts control of the vehicle such that the actual velocity of the vehicle is at least as fast as the lower speed limit of the designated area when the vehicle is in the designated area.

A remote control system and method for the remote control operation of a locomotive in the performance of a car-kicking sequence comprises a portable control unit operable from a location off-board of the locomotive. The portable control unit includes an operator interface allowing an operator to initiate, with a single step, a predetermined sequence of locomotive operations for automatically performing a car-kicking procedure and generating a signal responsive to the single step for transmission to the locomotive. The system also includes a memory for storing a set of instructions corresponding to the predetermined sequence. An onboard slave control unit, interfaced with an operating system on the locomotive, receives the signal and automatically controls movement of the locomotive according to the set of instructions.

A railway car brake system includes a pneumatic brake cylinder and a relay valve for controlling pressure in the brake cylinder. The relay valve is responsive to a pilot pressure which is generated by a pilot valve connected to the relay valve, the pilot valve including at least one piezoelectric element. The system also includes a controller connected to the piezoelectric element to control the pilot pressure and thereby control braking. The pilot valve releases braking upon loss of power to the at least one piezoelectric element to thereby provide a failsafe release of braking. The pilot valve may also include a first piezoelectric element for controlling fluid flow from a pressure source to the relay valve, and a second piezoelectric element for controlling fluid flow from the relay valve to atmosphere.

A system for communicating data in a train is provided. The system includes at least one respective router transceiver unit positioned in each of at least two rail vehicles of the train. Each router transceiver unit is coupled to a trainline that extends between the rail vehicles. The trainline is an existing cable bus used in the train for transferring propulsion control data between the rail vehicles that controls at least one of tractive effort or braking effort of the rail vehicles. The router transceiver units are configured to communicate network data over the trainline. In one embodiment, the trainline is an Electrically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) trainline and the propulsion control data is ECP brake data used to control operations of brakes in the train.

A method of controlling a neutral section operation of a train (14) including a lead locomotive (16) and at least one remote locomotive (12) in communication with the lead locomotive. The locomotives are electrically powered from respective electrical connections to a catenary (22) having at least one neutral section (26). The method includes sensing when a lead locomotive is proximate the neutral section of the catenary. The lead locomotive then commands the remote locomotive to perform a neutral section operation when the lead locomotive has traveled a distance equal to a distance (20) between the lead locomotive and the remote locomotive. The lead locomotive determines when to issue a neutral section command based on a speed of the lead locomotive and an elapsed time from when the lead locomotive senses its location proximate the neutral section.
