Abstract:
A small form factor optical disk drive is provided that incorporates a hybrid solid immersion objective lens (SIOL). The SIOL includes a central aspheric lens portion and a surrounding diffractive optical element portion.
Abstract:
A small form factor optical disk drive is provided. An OPU is mounted on a sled such that an optical path length to the optical media falls substantially between coherence function maxima.
Abstract:
An optical medium uses a single structure or format (such as identical materials, layers and the like) for both a region for holding mastered data and a writeable area. In one aspect, a writeable region of a medium with mastered content is used in connection with paying, collecting or accounting for usage or royalties for proprietary intellectual property embodied in or associated with the content. In one embodiment, the (preferably write-once) writeable area can be used for storing later-written information such as annotations, highlighting, reordering, remixing, modifications, supplements, collections, additions, bookmarks, cross references, hypertext or hyperlinks and the like. Preferably, annotations and similar materials can be associated, by the user, with particular portions or content of the mastered data.
Abstract:
The invention provides apparatus for ultrasonically testing the edges and/or the body of a metallic workpiece, utilizing water as a coupling medium between ultrasonic transducers and a metallic product moving relative to the testing apparatus along a predetermined pathway; which apparatus comprises guide means defining the pathway to be followed by the metal product, one or more reservoirs being the pathway each incorporating a top opening through which water can overflow to contact successive parts of the piece to be tested, located thereabove and a plurality of ultrasonic transducers located in one or more groups within the reservoir or reservoirs and directed towards the edge or body of the piece to be tested so that they may be static, adjustable transverse to the direction of movement of the product along the pathway, or reciprocate in a sinusoidal manner to traverse all or part of the pathway.
Abstract:
The disclosure relates to a method for use in the practice of animal husbandry which comprises the oral administration to meat producing animals a compound of the aureolic acid group. Solid and liquid compositions for use in the method are also disclosed, together with a novel process for the manufacture of mixed mithramycins, and an improved process for their purification.
Abstract:
An improved electroluminescent display panel having an X-Y array of display elements upon a planar insulating substrate. Integral thin film transistor circuit elements and drive signal buses are interconnected on the panel with individual electroluminescent electrodes covering a large area of the panel to increase the active display area. The electroluminescent electrode is a multilevel electrode with a first level portion disposed on the insulated substrate, a second level electrode portion disposed over an insulative polymerized layer which covers the thin film circuit areas and the drive signal buses, and a connecting electrode portion which extends between the first and second level electrode portions.
Abstract:
In one embodiment, a storage device with biometric access includes: a biometric scanner adapted to scan a biological feature of a user to provide a corresponding extracted biometric template; and a storage engine adapted to retrieve an encrypted biometric template from a storage medium and to retrieve a corresponding encrypted content key from the storage medium. The storage engine generates a first key and combines the first key with a media identifier from the storage medium to provide a content key. Using the content key, the storage engine decrypts the retrieved encrypted biometric template. If the extracted biometric template matches the retrieved biometric template, the storage engine grants a user access to content on the storage medium.
Abstract:
An optical storage disc has portions for storing pre-recorded or mastered information and portions for storing user writable information, where the mastered portion and the writable portions have different storage capacities or areal data densities. During manufacture, a substrate is formed with a sequence of bumps to represent the mastered information and a series of grooves and lands, where information can later be written on the lands. A phase-change material is deposited over the substrate, the phase-change material changing both physical structure and optical constants when written to, e.g., by a laser.
Abstract:
The invention provides a single chip implementation of a digital receiver for multicarrier signals that are transmitted by orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. Improved channel estimation and correction circuitry are provided. The receiver has highly accurate sampling rate control and frequency control circuitry. BCH decoding of tps data carriers is achieved with minimal resources with an arrangement that includes a small Galois field multiplier. An improved FFT window synchronization circuit is coupled to the resampling circuit for locating the boundary of the guard interval transmitted with the active frame of the signal. A real-time pipelined FFT processor is operationally associated with the FFT window synchronization circuit and operates with reduced memory requirements.
