Abstract: A neurocomputational electrochemical sensing device (1) is proposed for predicting properties of a substance. The device (1) comprises: a plurality of electrochemical sensors constituting a sensor array (3), the sensors being sensitive to sensed attributes advantageous to predict a set of properties of interest of the substance, each sensor being configured to output a sensor output signal indicative of a sensor response of the respective sensor to measurable changes in the sensed attributes of the substance; a readout circuit (5) for biasing the sensors and for conditioning the sensor output signals into readout circuit output signals to facilitate further processing of the sensor responses; and an artificial neural network processor (7) for processing the readout circuit output signals, the processor (7) comprising neurons interconnected by synapses, the processor (7) being configured to output a set of processor output signals whose signal values are indicative of the properties to predict. The sensor array (3) comprises first electrochemical sensors selective to properties correlated with the desired properties to predict, and second electrochemical sensors sensitive primarily to the main interferents of the substance. The neurons and/or the synapses are configured to be trained to compensate for sensor drift and/or cross-sensitivities upon generating the processor output signals.

Abstract: This invention discloses a calcination process to produce high purity CO2 from solids containing CaCO3 which operates cyclically and continuously on the solids, arranged in a packed or a moving bed, and wherein each cycle comprises a first step where the combustion at atmospheric pressure of a fuel in the bed of solids containing CaCO3 heats them up to 800-900° C. and a second step wherein a vacuum pressure between 0.05 and 0.5 atm is applied to extract pure CO2 from the solids containing CaCO3 while cooling them by 30-200° C. Said combustion can be carried out directly with air, oxygen enriched air or O2/CO2 mixtures when the process is applied to the calcination of a continuous flow of limestone in a moving bed shaft kiln. The process is also applied to calcine CaCO3 formed in reversible calcium looping processes comprising a carbonation reaction step to form CaCO3 from CaO.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for preparing a self-standing catecholamine-based membrane, the process comprising the steps of: (a) cross-linking a catechol derivative with an amine selected from the group consisting of: a known aliphatic amine hydrocarbon of formula (II); and an aromatic amine of formula (IIbis), in a liquid medium, wherein both the catechol and the amine are soluble, at a pH comprised from 6.5 to 10, and under appropriate agitation to create a catecholamine membrane in the air/liquid interface in the absence of any support; and b) isolating the membrane resulting from step (a) from the air/liquid interface. The resulting self-standing catecholamine-based membrane was robust, easy to handle and manipulate, highly flexible and adaptable to any kind of surface without breaking, and adhesive. In addition, the free-standing membrane of the invention shows a Janus character, with an unexpected nanopatterning in the water-contact side which endows the membranes of the invention with a higher roughness surface, something of value to promote cell adhesion.

Abstract: It comprises optical assemblies that focus light onto individual first optical fibers which are combined together in a final single optical fiber, collecting a considerable amount of light from a target, to feed an instrument such as a spectrograph. The first optical fibers are kept centred on the target through image devices that also provide images, and these images can be combined to give rise to a high-quality image of the field surrounding the target. The final effective aperture of the device is scalable, using different numbers of optical assemblies and depending on their diameters.

Abstract: The invention relates to a recombinant bacterium and uses thereof. In particular, it relates to the use of recombinant bacteria to translocate cargo proteins into the cytosol of target cells. Said recombinant bacteria comprises a T3 secretion system under the control of a genetic regulatory circuit and a targeting module which allow the recombinant bacteria to target specific cells, adhere to these and inject their cargo into the cytosol of the target cells.
