An apparatus for providing a signal related to a position of a part comprises an exciter coil, and a receiver coil disposed proximate to the exciter coil. The exciter coil generates magnetic flux when the exciter coil is energized by a source of electrical energy, such as an alternating current source. The receiver coil generates a receiver signal when the exciter coil is energized, due to an inductive coupling between the receiver coil and the exciter coil. The receiver coil has a plurality of sections, the inductive coupling tending to induce opposed voltages in at least two of the sections. Embodiments of the present invention include linear sensors, rotational sensors, and novel configurations for improved ratiometric sensing.

An omni-directional antenna includes an electrically conductive ground plane, an electrically conductive parasitic disc spaced upwardly apart from the ground plane and parallel thereto, and an electrically conductive vertical antenna element extending up through the center of the ground plane and parasitic disc, The vertical element terminates in a tip defining a length above the parasitic disc that is matched to a frequency of interest. The parasitic disc and ground plane are preferably both circular. To prevent electrical connection, the vertical element preferably extends through separate insulators in the parasitic disc and ground plane. The length of the vertical element is matched to a microwave frequency; in particular, the length of the vertical element is proportioned to one-quarter wavelength of the frequency of interest. The invention is particularly suited to microwave frequencies.

In the preferred embodiments, the alloys are metallurgically compatible with the cast Al—Si alloy used for the engine head. A reconfigurable frequency selective surface (FSS) includes a plurality of conducting patches supported on the surface of a dielectric layer, with selectable electrical interconnections between the conducting patches so as to provide a desired characteristic. The reconfigurable FSS can be used in a reconfigurable artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). A reconfigurable AMC includes a dielectric layer, a conducting back-plane on one surface of the dielectric layer, and a reconfigurable FSS on the other surface of the dielectric layer. A reconfigurable AMC can be used as a dynamically reconfigurable ground plane for a low-profile antenna system.

A tire carrier assembly includes a rotation shaft and a housing have a bottom wall including a first aperture for receiving the rotation shaft. The housing also includes a sidewall extending upward from the bottom wall defining an interior space. The sidewall includes inner and outer surfaces. A sheave is disposed within the interior space of the housing and has a second aperture that receives the rotation shaft. The sheave also includes a gear member associated with it. Also included is a torque plate having a base, the base having opposing first and second surfaces and a third aperture formed therein. The third aperture has a gear portion formed around a periphery of the aperture. The torque plate also includes an arm portion projecting radially from the base. The gear portion of the torque plate is in operable engagement with the gear member of the sheave. An eccentric bushing having first and second opposing surfaces and an integrally formed bounding wall includes a fourth aperture receiving the rotation shaft. The first surface includes a cam formed thereon. The cam is positioned within the third aperture of the torque arm. A cable guide is positioned within the internal space of the housing and is located radially outboard relative to the sheave for positioning a cable about the sheave. The cable guide includes a lobe formed thereon for contacting a cable. A cover plate having a fifth aperture formed therein receives the rotation shaft. The cover plate is attached to the housing. The tire carrier assembly includes a frangible component that breaks upon the application of a predetermined force allowing the torque plate to freely rotate about the rotation shaft wherein the arm portion of the torque plate engages the inner surface of the sidewall of the housing allowing a controlled payout of cable wound about the sheave.

Apparatus and methods are disposed for maintaining the proper positioning of a prosthetic implant having proximal and distal ends within a prepared bone cavity during cement injection and curing. First stabilization means, implantable within the bone cavity, minimize lateral movement of the distal end of the implant, while second stabilization means, physically separate from the means for minimizing lateral movement of the distal end of the implant, minimize both the lateral movement of the proximal end of the implant and the rotational movement of the implant overall. In the preferred embodiment, the second stabilization means includes an apertured cap removably securable to the end of a bone having the prepared cavity through which the implant is inserted and held in place. This cap, which may either be entirely rigid or include a pliable membrane in the vicinity of the aperture, preferably further includes a first port associated with cement injection and a second port associated with cement over-pressurization. In an alternative embodiment, the second stabilization means includes a manually operated mechanism enabling the implant to be temporarily yet rigidly secured thereto in accordance with a desired orientation, preferably affording adjustments along multiple degrees of freedom prior to the rigid securement thereof.
