Abstract: An improved low inductance spring for holding a noise suppression resistor either in the bore of a spark plug insulator or at some other suitable point in the ignition system for an internal combustion engine. The spring is formed from an elongated resilient conductor which is preferably flat. The conductor is shaped to have a plurality of reverse bends which simulate pleats in the bellows of an accordion.

Abstract: A spark plug has an insulator, a center electrode disposed in an axial hole, a resistor disposed in the axial hole and a seal member disposed between the resistor and the center electrode in the axial hole. The insulator includes an inner-diameter decreasing portion and a small inner-diameter portion. The center electrode includes a head portion supported on the inner-diameter decreasing portion of the insulator. The spark plug satisfies the following conditions: 1.8 mm≤L; and Cp≤11 mm where, assuming a region of the insulator from a boundary of the inner-diameter decreasing portion and the small inner-diameter portion to a rear end of the seal member as a specific region, L is a length of the specific region; D1 is an average inner diameter of the axial hole within the specific region; D2 is an average outer diameter of the specific region; and Cp is L/log(D2/D1).

Abstract: A spark plug including a metal shell having a ground electrode, a cylindrical ceramic insulator held in the metal shell and having therein an axial hole having a small-diameter portion, and a large-diameter portion larger in diameter than the small-diameter portion and connected to a rear end of the small-diameter portion via a stepped portion, a resistor arranged in the large-diameter portion, a center electrode having: a flange portion projecting in a radial direction in the large-diameter portion to contact with the stepped portion; and a leg portion arranged in the small-diameter portion so as to extend from the flange portion toward the front end side, and a seal body arranged in the large-diameter portion and electrically connecting between the center electrode and the resistor. The seal body includes an insulating seal body that comes into contact with the ceramic insulator, and a conductive seal body.

Abstract: A spark plug combustion ionization sensor for measuring ion current inside the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The sensor measures ion current which flows when the energy released during combustion ionizes the air inside the cylinder, and thus can detect combustion and emission parameters. The spark plug combustion ionization sensor generally includes an insulated, dedicated sensing electrode, separate from the sparking electrode of a spark plug. The sensing electrode may also be shielded to further reduce interference such as electromagnetic interference (EMI). The use of a dedicated electrode allows for ion current measurement with less electromagnetic noise from the ignition process, and also eliminates the need for circuitry that is typically necessary when the sparking electrode is also used to sense ion current.
