Abstract: A force sensor apparatus includes a tube portion having a plurality of radial ribs and at least one fiber optic strain gauge positioned over each of the plurality of radial ribs. The strain gauges comprise a negative thermo-optic coefficient optical fiber material. A proximal end of the tube portion is operably couplable to a shaft of a surgical instrument and a distal end of the tube portion is proximally couplable to a wrist joint. Optionally, a thermal shunt shell is over an outer surface of the tube portion. Adjacent fiber optic strain gauges with differing thermal responses are used to solve simultaneous equations in strain and temperature to derive strain while rejecting thermal effects.

Abstract: Certain embodiments of the disclosed technology provide systems and methods for an improved header and corresponding port associated with a transducer assembly. The header and port define mating threaded portions, thread stop portions, and a weld gap region. The thread stop portions are configured to mate and maintain a pre-loading tension between the threaded portions during and after applying a weld in the weld gap region. The weld gap region is configured to have a predetermined gap distance such that the weld seals the transducer without stress in the weld. The mating of the first and second thread stops are configured to maintain at least a portion of the pre-loading tension.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed relating to composite photonic materials used to design structures and detecting material deformation for the purpose of monitoring structural health of physical structures. According to one aspect, a composite structure is provided that includes a base material, an optical diffraction grating and one or more fluorophore materials constructed such that localized perturbations create a measurable change in the structure's diffraction pattern. An inspection device is also provided that is configured to detect perturbations in the composite structure. The inspection device is configured to emit an inspecting radiation into the structure and capture the refracted radiation and measure the change in the diffraction pattern and quantify the perturbation based on the wavelength and the angular information for the diffracted radiation.

Abstract: A computer system for identifying a posture adopted by a subject is disclosed. The computer system includes a computer processor that is configured to execute the following functions: obtain a set of reference pressure images, each of the reference pressure images associated with a known posture; obtain a recorded pressure image of the subject; compare the recorded pressure image of the subject with a candidate pressure image from the set of reference pressure images; and repeat the comparing function until the recorded pressure image with the candidate pressure image.

The technical means of the device is simple and easy, and the device can satisfy the requirements in related fields of precision positioning, precision and ultra-precision machining, precision operating, precision measurement, micro-electro-mechanical system, etc. for the precision-locating drive end pre-tightening device.

Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure are directed to air pocket sensors and wearable articles including air pocket sensors. According to one embodiment, an air pocket sensor can comprise a sensor enclosure comprising a substantially disc-shaped enclosure base and a substantially disc-shaped enclosure cap of a substantially same size as and joined with the enclosure base. The enclosure cap can comprise a domed portion forming an air pocket within the sensor enclosure. An electronic sensor can be disposed within the air pocket of the sensor enclosure. An electrical conductor can be connected with the electronic sensor and can extend through the sensor enclosure. The electronic sensor can comprise, for example, a pressure sensor, a temperature sensor, a medical sensor, etc. In some cases, the enclosure can be substantially air tight.

Abstract: An apparatus imparts motion to a test object such as a motor vehicle in a controlled fashion. A base has mounted on it a linear electromagnetic motor having a first end and a second end, the first end being connected to the base. A pneumatic cylinder and piston combination have a first end and a second end, the first end connected to the base so that the pneumatic cylinder and piston combination is generally parallel with the linear electromagnetic motor. The second ends of the linear electromagnetic motor and pneumatic cylinder and piston combination being commonly linked to a mount for the test object. A control system for the linear electromagnetic motor and pneumatic cylinder and piston combination drives the pneumatic cylinder and piston combination to support a substantial static load of the test object and the linear electromagnetic motor to impart controlled motion to the test object.
