摘要： A vehicle safety apparatus includes a housing assembly (24) which is mounted on a steering wheel (22) of a vehicle. The housing assembly (24) encloses an air bag (38) and an inflator (44). In addition, the housing assembly (24) encloses a horn switch (58). The housing assembly (24) includes an inner cover (34) which is secured to a base (28) and an outer cover (36) which at least partially encloses the inner cover. The horn switch (58) is disposed between the inner and outer covers (34 and 36). The horn switch (58) is formed as a unit and includes a pair of electrically conductive layers (134 and 136) of material which are enclosed by an envelope (142) of electrically insulating material. The horn switch (58) has a unitary construction which facilitates installation of the horn switch between the inner and outer covers (34 and 36) and, if necessary, removal of a defective horn switch. To facilitate removal of a defective horn switch (58), the outer cover (36) is movable relative to the inner cover (34) to expose the horn switch (58) while the inner cover remains secured to the base (28) and the outer cover remains secured to the inner cover and the base.

摘要： A snap-on air bag cover for use with an air bag container having a retaining member. The snap-on air bag cover includes a plastic front cover adapted to directly enclose an uninflated air bag. A pair of plastic side panels are connected to opposite sides of the front cover. A resilient clip member extends from each of the side panels, the clip member having an extending snap-on groove defined therein adapted to cooperate with the retaining member for affixing the air bag cover to the air bag container. The pair of side panels are connected to the front cover such that the side panels and resilient clip members are permitted to pivotably travel away from each other in opposite directions allowing the retaining member to enter and abuttingly engage the snap-on groove thereby retaining the air bag cover on the air bag container. A horn switch assembly is disposed in and substantially fills a pair of compartments formed at the inner surface of the cover. The switch assembly is separable along a tear seam with different portions of the switch assembly being located in the different compartments which are formed by a pair of spaced rear panels heat-staked to stakes formed on the inner surface of the front cover and which extend through apertures in the switch assembly.

摘要： A steering wheel (12) incorporates an air bag unit (22). The air bag unit has a cover door (30) with a transducer (38) molded in a deformable front wall (35) of the cover door. The transducer can be a force sensitive resistor (38) which is operably connected to an electrical circuit (42) that actuates a horn (44) when the circuit senses a change in the resistance of force sensitive resistor (38). The force sensitive resistor (38) produces a suitable change in resistance when hand pressure is exerted on the front wall (35).

摘要： An automotive air bag cover including a horn switch device incorporated therein, is provided. The air bag cover includes substantially rigid front and side panels which are adapted to enclose an uninflated automotive air bag. The front panel has inner and outer surfaces and is connected to the side panels at seams to permit the inflating air bag to leave the cover as the inflating air bag exerts a force at the inner surface of the front panel sufficient to cause the front panel to separate from the side panels along the seams. The horn switch device includes a flexible, manually operable diaphragm at the outer surface of the front panel. The diaphragm has a first electrically conductive inner surface for making a circuit with a corresponding second electrically conductive inner surface of the front panel upon manual actuation of the diaphragm.

摘要： An inflatable restraint module mounting mechanism is disclosed for use in mounting an inflatable restraint module to a support structure such as the hub portion of a steering wheel. The inflatable restraint module is provided with a plurality of mounting members which are adapted to pass through and be retained within apertures in a support plate. The mounting members each include a slot for receiving a spring which traverses across the apertures of the support plate. The slots are preferably sized such that the mounting members are supported for limited movement in a direction longitudinal of the mounting members to permit actuation of a horn circuit. In addition, the springs are movable in a lateral direction to facilitate insertion of the mounting members through the apertures in the support plate.

The cover assembly comprises a closure which closes the container, and a horn blowing switch subassembly which is attached to the container. Access to the horn blowing switch subassembly is possible without disturbing the container or removing the module from the vehicle. Moreover, the horn blowing switch subassembly is located for convenient operation by a vehicle operator. It is also adapted to remain integrally connected with a structural portion of the container during deployment of the air bag.
